Decades of neglect: AIR, DD staff to protest, go on fast in Delhi

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 9: Programme Staff Association (PSA) of All India Radio and Doordarshan is the largest Association among the programme producing staff of AIR and DD. It has more than a thousand members in 190 units spread out all across the country. The Association has decided to undertake the avoidable path of agitation to register their protest against decades of neglect and apathy by various authorities, as far as departmental promotion and career progression at different levels in programme cadre are concerned.

PSA is organizing a peaceful silent march at Delhi, from Rajghat to Jantar Mantar, on March 11, followed by fasting at Jantar Mantar, to highlight the continuous neglect of decades-old pending and legitimate demands.

PSA members from Akashvani and Doordarshan Kendras, spread across the length and breadth of the country, are converging at Delhi to participate in the silent march and fasting. Most of them have not got their first regular promotion in a career spanning more than 25 years, in spite of the fact that sufficient promotional vacancies exist in the hierarchy. Hundreds of the content creating programme staff have retired humiliated and hurt, without getting a single promotion in their entire service career.

The primary reason for the dwindling audience and revenue of AIR and DD in the last few years is due to the sidelining of the content creators in this department. The agitation is to highlight two main issues, namely:

1. Stagnation in programme cadres due to non-convening of DPCs, and
2. Discrimination against programme staff by posting of ex-cadre officers and deputationists for posts belonging to the promotion quota of programme staff.

Due to Prime Minister's 'Maan ki Baat' programme, AIR and DD have been able to connect to the people. This can be sustained if Prasar Bharati takes effective steps to promote the content creators.

The protest by AIR and DD staff is right. I do not know whether they will win the fight as nowadays viewers prefer private channels. Their programmes are better and they spend a lot on publicity and mind you, their programmes are better. Moreover you can watch only one channel at a time, which is better. I wish good luck to Programme Association(PSA) in winning this protest which is genuine.

One cannot see DD and AIR as profit making industry comparing with private channels... Private channels are sponsored by big corporate peoples or leading politicians with specific aim of profit making or promoting some kind of propaganda... DD and AIR as a Public Service Broadcaster has several restrictions and duty bound rules. In the field of education, culture, limited entertainment and wide publicity to governments development programs, other than government media no private channels do the better.. After 1990 Government slowly discontinued regular recruitment system in the name of Prasar Bharati or other reasons and left several thousand vacant posts in Programme, Engineering and Administrative sections.. The average age of the staff in DD and AIR is reaching or crossing 50.. Staff at large are performing higher duties without any single promotion from three decades and going to retire in the same grade where they have joined... within five years 80 percent of staff are retiring.. Someone may be want to see the end of government media to take it over... Is it not the duty of ruling government to take care of its own media?

Biggest mistake DD did was they d actual profits earned during the First Biggest Ever Show RAMAYAN by Great Ramananda Sagar .Looking at the Profits earning in Several Crores .Zee TV took birth and then star etc etc
Actually No Radio or Tv Can match AIR or DD they are still the best but rigorous marketing by private channels ,adding masala to news all have lead to this type of situation

See I have done some instant investigation here...
    1. No private channels gives news as AIR and DD does. Some are pro left..some pro right..some pro rahul...oopsyyyyyyyy..yes...but
    2. Both DD n AIR try their best to give unbiased news.
    3. They were our 'allies' from the past.
    4. Do you know that staff here have not been promoted for the last 25 years! Shocking to say the least!
    5. Now some Babu has been appointed at the helm it seems who knows nothing! there certainly must be capable persons than him in the system...Who appointed him is a mystery...
Prasar Bharathi and the departments concerned should look at the plight of the dedicated staff.there are dedicated listeners of AIR and avid watchers of DD too which the establishment must take into consideration.

Please don't ask if they could tolerate it for 60 years, why agitate now !

You must consider the self propagation election campaign NaMo took up, the amount paid to a British author to write a book about a man he never met or knew in his life (none other Modi) or the shows that conducted in each and every foreign locations he went to.

I am not asking where that money came from for all this but he employees of AIR,DD do.

If you can loiter so much of revenue for self propagation, why not give some to us also ? Its they who ask, not me !

Well, it did not happen in 60 years since independence but now it did. Thats the difference !

At the time when most of the main stream media houses have turned into Presstitutes & political Pimps, bootlicking scamgress and its interest, its in the intrest of saving true journalisem and spreading the right message to the people of our country to enrich their patriotisem and expose these anti nationa parties, medias and people, Central Govt should step in and review AIR & DD and reach out to people.
