Mangaluru, Mar 12: A man has been convicted for mentally and physically harassing his wife and for being responsible for her suicide.

Sabanna Chalavadi (33) from Shiraguppy, presently a resident of Derebail in city, is the person convicted. The court has sentenced him with rigorous imprisonment of 4 years and has imposed a fine of Rs 15,000.

Sabanna’s wife had committed suicide after she could not bear with the harassment by him.

The district and sessions court judge Uma M G convicted the accused and pronounced the judgment on Friday March 11 in city. She said that the convict will get an additional term of one year if he fails to pay the fine. The convict also received a sentence of one year rigorous imprisonment for abusing his deceased wife with bad words (section 504- Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). Both these sentences will be served concurrently.

The court said that Rs 10,000 from the fine collected will go to the children of the deceased.
