New Delhi, Sep 26: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday September 25, launched its telemedicine connectivity at its cancer treatment facility.

The telemedicine node will be a part of the overall telemedicine initiatives at AIIMS to connect and offer consultations to around 100 networked hospitals in the country and abroad.

"The facility will help doctors in remote places to take tele-consultation for cancer patients from the faculty in the hospital," G K Rath, head of Radiology Department in AIIMS, told reporters.

The telemedicine link established between the hospitals will provide the patients easy access to best medical facilities at their places.

"The telemedicine link will reduce the cost incurred by the patient for treatment, besides shortening the waiting time at hospitals," he said.

The hospital has plans to strengthen its intra-hospital interlinking in next few months so that experts in various departments can directly converse with the patients and doctors from their respective departments.

The facility will provide emergency on call consultation for the networked institutions, regular scheduled telemedicine consultation and tele-education lectures, teaching and training programmes.

The AIIMS telemedicine facility will also provide consultations to the SAARC and pan-African countries.
