Mangaluru, Mar 12: A newly-constructed girls' hostel of Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) college built at a cost of Rs 1 crore was inaugurated by higher education minister at KPT here on Saturday March 12.
The programme was formally inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the minister and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, T B Jayachandra said, "People of Dakshina Kannada are very skillful and intelligent. We were thinking of starting aerospace engineering course and it will be started first in Mangaluru. This will help in channelizing the intelligence and skill of this region. In this context, I feel Mangaluru is the right place to start this course.
"KPT is an old and reputable polytechnic college. Over 1,400 students gain education from this institution. Women students consist more than half of the strength. It certainly seems that it needs more facilities.
"Minister Abhayachandra Jain had told me that this is his alma mater, so he has urged more funds to be provided for the infrastructure development of this college. In the next financial year, I will try to provide more funds for this purpose," he added.
District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said, "KPT is the most reputable college in this region, started before Independence. It has imparted education to many, and many have reached good positions. This college needs over Rs 2 crore for renovation and I request the education minister to provide this grant so that this college can be completely renovated."
Sports minister Abhayachandra Jain, MLA Mangaluru South J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza and others were present.
