Sullia, Mar 14: A person who claimed himself to be a police sub-inspector when dealing with the personnel of the police station here was arrested for trying to dupe the police.

A woman from Kanakamajalu in the taluk had died after falling into a pond about a month back. The woman's son, Girish, had complained to the police in this case, suspecting foul play. A friend of the complainant, who was trying to extend help to him, in an attempt to convince the police to act fast, projected himself as a sub-inspector.

The arrested person happens to be Udayakumar, a resident of Devangoor near Kottigehara in Moodigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district.

Putamma, wife of Baremelu Narayana Gowda, had drowned in a pond located inside the family plantation on January 29 this year. A complaint of unnatural death had been registered, and the police had visited the spot for inspection. Girish visited the police station on February 27, and filed a complaint suspecting it to be a case of murder, on the basis of the condition the body was in, and an injury mark found near the ear of his mother's mortal remains. Reportedly, Girish had spoken about his suspicion about the cause behind his mother's death with his friend, Udayakumar. Udayakumar had offered to help him in case Girish wanted to visit the police station to pursue this case.

Udayakumar always accompanied Girish during his several trips to police station as and when summoned by the police, and also office of the district superintendent of police etc. Every time he had claimed himself to be a police sub-inspector with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). However, the way he spoke and certain words he used during the conversations had given rise to suspicion about his claims in the minds of police personnel.

On Saturday, the police had asked Girish to visit the office of the police circle inspector here. Udayakumar was present with his friend as usual. His behavior during this visit worked to aggravate suspicion already the police had about him. Both the police circle inspector, B S Satish, and sub-inspector, Chandrashekhar, closely questioned Udayakumar, and asked for his identity card. Udayakumar hesitated initially but at the end, confessed that he is not a police sub-inspector as claimed.

The police arrested him on Saturday evening, by registering a case of being a suspicious person trying to mislead the police. He was produced before the tahsildar. He has since been released on bail.
