Mangaluru, Mar 15: Mangaluru has been ranked the third cleanest among 476 cities in the country by the union ministry of urban development under the Swachh Bharat Mission, announced Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) mayor Harinath Jogi.

Addressing a press meet at MCC here on Tuesday March 15, Harinath said, "The survey for the sanitation rating was conducted during 2013-15 in line with the National Urban Sanitation Policy, 2008. The rating measured the sanitation performance of cities on 19 indicators. Mangaluru scored 64.74 points, while Mysuru stood first with 65.09 points. I thank all the officials, labourers and all those who have contributed in earning this ranking by maintaining the cleanliness of the city."

The areas that need improvement are access to and use of toilets by urban poor and other unserved households, access to and use of toilets for floating and institutional population, improvement in the recycle and reuse of treated sewage, improvement in the collection of solid waste, improvement in the processing and safe disposal of solid waste, ensuring city waste cause no adverse impact on surrounding areas outside city limits, enhancing monitoring and evaluation mechanism to deal with the problem of open defecation, addressing the issue of cost recovery from sewerage systems, improving grievance redressal systems for complaints regarding sewerage, addressing the issue of cost recovery in solid waste services, improvement in the door-to-door collection of solid waste, sanctions for deviance on polluters/ institutions for letting out untreated effluents and littering, improvement in the quality of drinking water, prevention of pollution of water bodies and prevention of diarrheal diseases."

He futher added, "Another survey will be held somewhere between October and December this year and our aim is to upgrade our ranking then. In this direction necessary steps would be taken."

Just by reading most comments, I feel really sorry for the guys who are blaming, tagging or writing with half information.

Mayor is absolutely right in what he has said.

Recent survey of 'Swachh Abhiyan' was published only for 73 cities. Has anyone given thought why only 73 cities there?

Why mayor is referring to 400 and odd cities here?

Sometimes I wonder why Mangaloreans known for intelligence show that they don't have it.

Earlier survey was only for the cities having population of 1 million and above.

What mayor refers is the comprehensive survey that includes even smaller coties having population of less than 1 million.

Further new rating of only 1 million and above was introduced for competition among peers in terms of sizable population.

Anyways, comments can be made at will however, just thinking twice before commenting could help us to review if we are right or wrong.

If anybody has doubt they can check the credentials throguh RTI instead of blaming or tagging.

To all the folks who are criticizing Mr Harinath.... First of all he was elected as a mayor of the city on 11th & this press meet was on 15th. He is not self praising here. He is just informing the people of the city with regard to the information(email) received from the concerned department..
Please note that it is not Mr Harinath who has done the survey...so please gain proper information before criticizing anyone.

Seems that the information is incorrect.
AS per the latest list released by PIB, Mangalore neither figures in the Top Ten rankings nor in the list of 73 cities http://pib.nic.in/newsite/mbErel.aspx?relid=136427

Even in the earlier list released in Aug'2015, Mangalore didn't figure in the Top Ten, but was first in the category of other cities. Refer link http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=124639

Looks like Mayor is ill-informed, or he should reveal the source of the information.

Mangalore should create a Task Force Organisation to complete those miscellaneous work that the Corporation and the PWD have not completed. Such small finishing touch if we don't take, the whole completed project looks ugly. The Municipal Corporation should concentrate on developing all the footpaths and shifting of the electric poles on the footpaths. All the speed breakers should be standardised scientifically like in Dubai. The Corporation should introduce road vacuum cleaner to shift the dust to a wet pit. All the best!

It looks so ridiculous. I wonder what criteria they use to rank clean cities. This is nothing but a joke being played on us. Just a visit around the city and you will come to know that it certainly doesn't figure among the cleanest or even clean. If you call this as the third cleanest city then only God save us! Please stop fooling the people with these tags. The environment in Mangalore is in a total mess, no clean air to breathe, debris and garbage lying here and there, water bodies polluted, no proper footpaths, haphazard traffic....the list goes on. And still we get a tag of third cleanest??????? Ha! Ha! Ha!. Mangalore in the eighties and nineties would have been worthy of such a tag, but definitely not today's Mangalore. In the name of development, the city has been completely destroyed since the past 15 years.
