Mangaluru, Mar 16: Officials of the local city corporation led a drive to clear roadsides of unauthorized petty shops at various places here on Tuesday March 16 morning.

The operation was executed by revenue officer, Praveenchandra, health officer, Manjaiah Shetty, Vijay, and some subordinate officials, under the directions of city corporation commissioner.

Police personnel and contingents of Karnataka State Reserve Police were in charge of security during the drive. The officials, who cleared pavements at city bus stand, Rao and Rai Circle etc, informed that they will continue with the drive at more places in the city.

Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, a few days ago, had directed the officials to remove unauthorized petty shops from footpaths and roadsides. In tune thereof, the current operation was conducted.

When the officials proceeded to remove a Nandini milk booth of which licence had reportedly been not renewed, there were exchange of heated words between the booth owner and officials. Thereafter, the officials confined their operation to just removing of poles projecting outside.

The booth owner, reacting to the incident, claimed that he holds the licence for running the booth and the officials were wrong in trying to demolish the booth. He said that he had erected a roof to protect the booth from heavy rain, and noted that the officials removed the poles which were outside the booth with JCB. He said that his water tank was broken in the process.

Speaking to daijiworld, commissioner of MCC Dr H S Gopalkrishna said that notices were given to owners of the petty shops on the roadside a few days ago and they were given time to shift their shops. "In most of the cases there was no opposition from them. In the drive that took place from 6.30 amd 9.30 am, along with petty shops, we have also demolished unauthorized flexes and hoardings. I request others encroachers to shift their belongings at the earliest as it will attract similar demolition," he said.

Kudos. Well done. Very happy with the MCC drive. But want to remind the Govt officials not to target only the minorities but also take the action of the bigwigs into consideration. There are lot of unauthorized shops/residences violating the norms and rules of the city. Moreover unauthorized stuff is sold in many of the small shops. A surprise raid or check should be done especially near schools and colleges. That will put an end to the menace and our children will be protected.

Good Job...Government should not give permission to open shop on road side. It spoil everything. No decency also. Now a days anybody can sit & sale anything on road. what is this nonsense!! They sell fish, fruits, vegetables, T- coconuts etc etc. Before we used to go market. But Now a days on roadside everything is getting. For them no tax no rent nothing. Without license are nuisance to public. Even they throw wastage on road.
Let them do hard work. There are many opportunities are there.

Demolishing the unauthorized shops according to law is right but this petty vendors are depending on them for their daily bread what about that. Sometimes government must think beyond law and order. Different arrangement must have been made where this petty vendors are not affected. Why law is implemented only on poor people?.

What about the shops at the old service bus stand and the shops at market road. The shops at the market road from the central market road till the Ideal ice cream shop are a nuisance to the general public. The authorities should make better arrangements.

MCC should earmark 10 acres of land in outskirt of main city and set up flee market style of stalls in 5 acres and another 5 acres for parking. These stalls can be leased to these footpath vendors for buying and selling cheaper/used products. It will work out better for everyone, if it is organized well.

I wish this is done on market road and Kankanady maidan too. Kankanady maidan has now become a bus stand. Buses are washed with water from the market. The Corporator of the area has been informed and no action has been taken. The police get their regular tips and daily egg omlet and bread.

Mr.Kamath, I agree with you. The Kankanady Maidan has been converted into a bus stop and carts cooking chinese food / omlets / bhel puri etc. Buses are being washed with free water from the market. The place is a total mess and stinks in the evening and people find it difficult to cross these carts and enter the market. The carts throw the used cooking oil / dirty water which was used to wash plates on the ground. I would like the DC to inspect this place after 7.30pm.

Good work OF MCC.Donot end with days work.Your clear foot path in the city of mangalore occupeid bybuildings .Clearaly demark road margin so that there cannot be any parking or encrochment by building owners.Unless MCC HAS intentions to clear road margins and footpaths the problem will not be solved to padestrian.First clear encrochment before mcc building road flying to circuit house and bejai kapikad road. The enthusiastic mayor must instruct his official suitably and fix responsibilty.Fix responsibility to MCC STAFF then problem will be solved

Good job by the MCC but in the same time poor petty shop owners should be provided with alternative arrangements for their livelihood. However people think or under the impression that they can do anything as per their whims and fancy, encroach anywhere they want and do their business. This is wrong. There are so many illegal activities are going on in and around Mangalore but there is no brake for all these activities. This is only poor people doing their business for their livelihood but how many illegal activities are going on by among the rich and affluent people. But nobody has got the guts to touch them. This is the good move by the MCC officials to clear unauthorized petty shops and in the meantime also take some steps against rich people, influential people who built their buildings or encroached the public/government place without valid permission. In the best interest of beautification of the city, streamline all these illegal activities and pave the way for enough space for public movement. This rule is applicable even to all the hotels, restaurants, roadside eateries, where no cleanness, hygiene is being maintained.Staffs are not wearing gloves,no uniforms,no clean shave,no pure drinking water and even utensils used are not cleaned properly.Health inspectors should visit all the food outlets and take the stock of their hygiene system properly in the best interest of general public's health

A very good work. They should know that the illegal shops should not be operated.
Health Minister also should take care of restaurants and it's kitchen and serving methods.
Restaurant and Bakery salesman/suppliers are never wear hand gloves while serving sweets and food. They go toilet and they use their bare hand picking food to serve customers. Also they sneeze and the same time serve food to the customer with bare hand. I have seen a girl was having wound in her fingers and the blood I can see in her bandage
were freely serving cakes and sweets to the customer.
If any salesman/girl in the restaurant/bakery without wearing gloves in the Gulf countries will face huge penalty or closure of shops by the Municipality.

Gulf countries and here you compare..aa?
What about toilet accessories used there and here?
    Like 'faucets' and all?
Here poor people have to go and turn round and round near the public taps to clean themselves...
    Do not make unfair comparison.
    Gloves aa? What gloves..aa?
In Gulf countries..Glove price added into cost of eateries and all that.
Here one has hardly any money to eat..how can he afford price of gloves?
    get the gist?
    Do not make unfair comparisons.
Here after eating all this, people are very healthy. In Gulf countries, eating everything clean..people come here for treatment for gas, obesity, bone density problems ..etc.
    India only good that way..o.k.?
