Mangaluru, Mar 20: The police have arrested two persons in connection to a murder that took place on the night of February 25 at Central Market in the city.
On the morning of February 26, an unknown person was found dead in the busy Central Market area. He was suspected to have been murdered and a case in this regard was registered in the north police station.
Addressing a press meet at his office here on Sunday March 20, police commissioner Chandra Sekhar said that on March 5, the deceased was identified as Jayananda alias Jaya Ammanna (50), a coolie worker from Moodushedde who was residing near CSI Kanthi Church.
In this regard, the police on March 20 arrested Ravi alias Raveendra Salian (35), a painter by profession and resident of Pumpwell, and Naveen (20) of Davangere. One of them was arrested at Pumpwell while the other was apprehended from KSRTC, Bejai.
The police commissioner said that on the night of the incident, the two accused started a quarrel with Jayananda under the influence of alcohol and it ended with his murder.
Chandra Sekhar said that the personnel of north police station led by SI Shantaram managed to crack the case even though the deceased and the accused were unknown at first. "This was a blind murder case without any clues. Even the CCTV images were unclear. The police team traced the accused with the help of a handkerchief and a piece of shirt. The ASI of traffic west station also helped in identifying the deceased and the accused, as he had spotted them together a week before the murder," he said, adding, "This was a scientific and professional investigation."
He also said that a financial dispute between the accused and the victim might have been the cause for the murder. "Further investigations are on," he added.
The investigation team led by SI Shantaram included police personnel Sujan Shetty, Rajesh Alva and Govardhan, under the direction of DCP Shantaraju, DCP Dr Sanjeev Patil and ACP Tilak Chandra. The police commissioner also announced a suitable reward for them.
On the raid and arrest of a bookie from a flat in Kadri by the CCB police on March 18, the police commissioner said that the accused Melwyn had contacts with a bookie from Mumbai and he used to also indulge in spot-fixing during World T20 matches. "The investigations are on and we are trying to gather more details about the bookie. It is a non-congnizable offence and the accused has been booked under sections 79 and 80 of the Karnataka Police Act," he said.
Chandra Sekhar further said that on the same day (March 18), the police also raided an illegal recreation club at Jyothi, Balmatta where gambling was going on, and arrested 10 persons and recovered Rs 14,610 in cash.
