RTI activist Baliga's murder - A rude shock to Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 22: 51-year-old Vinayak Baliga, electrical contractor by profession who was killed by unidentified assailants early morning on Monday March 21, was an active RTI (Right to Information) activist for the last 10 years. He had successfully sought out more than 90 RTIs, particularly helping the government in tracing electricity theft in the city. He had also helped many poor families who were deprived of rights. Police sources also said that he had filed a complaint in the high court alleging misappropriation of funds in the Venkataramana Temple.

Baliga was residing at Besant second lane, living along with his 86-year-old father P Ramachandra Baliga, 80-year-old mother Jayanthi R Baliga, three sisters among whom one is married, and his brother-in-law. Baliga was unmarried. His another sister is married and living in Mumbai.

The news of the murder sent shockwaves across the city, as in the past, the city had witnessed murders of rowdies and criminals, but this was a rare incident where an innocent who was involved in helping the poor had been hacked to death. There was no indication of his enmity with anyone, but involvement of people affected by his RTI activism is not ruled out.

Baliga's routine was to leave the house at 5.30 am every day for Taj Mahal hotel on his two-wheeler. He would then visit the temple and also go for a walk. On Monday morning, as he started from his house, two unidentified men attacked him with sharp weapons, and reportedly hacked him more than 17 times. One of his neighbours Dr Subraya Pai heard his shouts and came to him immediately, but by then the attackers had escaped.

A CCTV camera placed in a nearby office captured the scene of two men entering the lane in a two-wheeler, but the images were unclear as it was dark. There is no footage of the men leaving the spot. Mangaluru police chief Chandra Sekar, Barke police officials, fingerprint experts and others visited the spot to collect evidence.

It may be recalled that police had successfully arrested supari killers on a couple of occasions when city's businessmen were under threat. It is also said that supari killers from north India are easily available for such acts. The alert police, especially the CCB team had provided security to the people concerned in many cases. But an RTI activist's murder is not even being protested by anyone. When there are murders of RTI activists, and right and left wing activists in other parts of the country, there is lot of noise and debates heard, but this incident has hardly evoked any reaction from either the political parties or the politically-related outfits.

After this, can any RTI activist or anyone who fights for people's rights work fearlessly in Mangaluru?

While I respect Mr. Baliga too much, I dont think fighting the corrupt system in India is worth anything... How many times have we seen this happen? Do you remember Mr. Satyendranath Dubey who was an upright IIT educated officer killed by Mafia in Bihar? Finally same: old parents living in small home crying for their loving child... Few days politicians will come for votes then old parents all alone. Forget fighting and all that - just do your job or immigrate to a good country.

It is a real test for Mangaluru Police to prove that they are a professional force. Whether they will catch real culprits of such gruesome crime or will come under influence or pressure of the rich and the powerful remains to be seen. Such events strike at the heart of people's faith in GOD. This person was not a criminal by any known information in the public domain. So why does such a person have to die like this? If our criminal justice system were effective, no rich or powerful will dare to do such thing. They do now because they know they can get away with it. RIP Mr. Baliga

    I quote -
"Police sources also said that he had filed a complaint in the high court alleging misappropriation of funds in the Venkataramana Temple".

Why no VHP/BD/Sene (who were other wise very vocal on any attack on Hindu believer) is not demanding arrest of the culprits ...? & compensation of 20 lacs...?
Is there any possibility of conflict of interest...?

R.I.P. Baliga. Supreme Court Must order a judgment - Where ever there is a RTI activist murder or death, that case must handled by CBI and they should not allow PRP's (Political,Religious & Police).

In kerala they keep a track of all migrant workers since they are involved in crimes and run away after doing the crime. My request is to give an ID to all migrant workers so that they are traced and you can identify them Its very sad that a life is lost who was also a great RTI activist helping people.

It is true that people fighting for justice are risking their lives. But the ease in which they are killed is shocking. There should be public hue and cry against this kind of incidents. Otherwise, one day you and I will have also to face the fate of Mr Baliga. May he rest in peace. May his family find the strength, solace and support. May his spirit kindle the hearts of still many.

Mafia is thriving in Mangalore due to political backing. Criminal mafia, drugs mafia etc etc including political mafia but the most dangerous above all is religious mafia irrespective of religion, caste, creed.

I am sure, Vinay is a victim of religious mafia.

May Mr. Vinay Baliga's soul rest in peace.

However, we would like to condemn this heinous act. May Mr baligas soul rest in peace & may his family find peace & be consoled during this difficult period

God!! Please help his aged parents to bear this terrible loss. God has to give them justice.

    Now is the time..
God will have to come down from the heavenly throne and give an answer to his aged parents.

Why, God yourself are a friend of the poor, then why did you allow such a thing to happen to this noble person who was fighting for the rights of the poor.

    On another note…
Slowly and gradually all the religious places of worship regardless of caste and community - are becoming more of places of illegal business rather than prayer and worship. This is the sad tale of today.

The killers of Mr Baliga should be tracked and punished.

18% of people getting reservation and freebies are still counted under illiterates and they also come under most backward class.. No guesses where the money goes
