Mangaluru, Mar 22: An interactive meet was organized between Karnataka German Technical Training Institute (KGTTI) and the members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on the topic of skill development at the KCCI premises here on Tuesday March 22.
The formal function was inaugurated by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, while KCCI president Rammohan Maroor presided.
Addressing the formal function, chief guest Antonius Peter Jax, a German skill development expert, said, "Skill development is a real challenge in the global market. This is also key factor which controls the global competition. Upgrading skills will result in increase in output. If a person has skills coupled with knowledge, he is fully competent. Skills have evolved with time. Skills were part of our education system as well. Every country has its own set of skills and hence skill development in every country is unique. Today companies are looking for additional skills. Hence, the KGTTI is imparting skilll development in such a way that it will not only provide employment but also contribute to the Make in India concept."
In his address, DC Ibrahim said, "In the Middle East and other places outside Mangaluru, people speak highly of Mangalurean workers, and they are considered to be skilled and hardworking. They do more than justice to their do duty. For such a labour force, skill upliftment will definitely push the working standards and their personality as well.
"Along with that, additional skills yield good output. The world is fast changing, and most of the jobs are skill-oriented. If our skills are outdated then we will not have value in the market. Hence, constant upgrading of skills is required. Today certificate courses and job-oriented courses have to be designed to strengthen this place. We have a large cashew industry and people are skilled in this sector, but there are no courses or certification for the grading of the cashew. Similarly, the wood industry and plumbing have evolved drastically and even the real estate has boomed over the years. In these fields we require certification to enable the persons to be recognized as advisors or consultants. Hence we need to formulate new courses, and if this happens, a large number of people from this area will eventually get certification and can get employed easily," he said.
Anil Bhandary, state team leader of 'Gizis' and who works with KGTTI and the state government gave a powerpoint presentation exclusively for KCCI members on the aim and purpose of KGTTI. The audience asked various questions on new courses and techniques that can be introduced in KGTTI.
The session was moderated by Rammohan Maroor.
Director in-charge of KGTTI, Mangaluru Giridhar Salian welcomed the gathering. KCCI member Amar Saxena proposed the vote of thanks.
KCCI vice-president Jeevan Saldanha, honorary secretaries Vathika Pai and Gaurav Hegde and others were present.
