Bengaluru: Speaker takes both Cong, oppn MLAs to task over Puttur temple issue

Bengaluru, Mar 22: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Tuesday took both the ruling Congress and opposition BJP members to task for their rigid positions over the printing of the invitation for the Shree Mahalingeshwara Temple in Puttur taluk of coastal Dakshina Kannada district with the name of deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.

As the tempers rose in the house over the issue, Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister T B Jayachandra promised to avoid such controversies in future by bringing an amendment to the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act, 1997.

BJP member Sunil Kumar, who raised the issue, demanded that the State Government should withdraw the present invitation in the name of Ibrahim and reprint it by removing his name.

He contended that under the present Act, the temple festival should be held under the supervision of a Hindu only.

Strongly opposing the State Government's stand allegedly violating the law, Sunil Kumar wanted the State Government to clarify as to how it could violate the law under the pretext of adhering to the protocol of district deputy commissioner heading the temple festival committee.

The question invited strong protests from the treasury benches and even Kagodu Thimmappa expressed his displeasure by stating that such argument is against the spirit of constitution and fraught with dangerous consequences.

However, Thimmappa also vented his ire at the State Government by questioning, "Is it not possible to amend such a bad law a day. Bring an amendment to the act within 24 hours."

The arguments ended only after Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra assured the House that the Act would be amended to remove barriers of religion in conducting the temple festival in future.

Now in our Tulunadu all Shiva Temples have Vaishnava Priests who do not respect Devotees. Hence, govt should bring a legislation to make it compulsory that -all Shiva & Durga Temples should have only Shaiva priests and follow only Shaiva traditions in doing Shiva Pooja as has been the tradition in rest of India.

Law should be equal to all, amending only law to bring non Hindus to temple committee will pour more oil to fire.... ! If same law applies to Temple, Mosques & churches then it is justified.

This is an example to say that religion is like a drug to some (specially to politicians and fanatics). Where is the lesson for us in that? What has been achieved? There is no lesson or purpose because it's all about mass psychological enslavement. The irony is that religion is pretty much man made so mankind has really brought this onto themselves.

    Jeevan,
Hindus have been holding wakf portfolio since independence.
For example in Gujarat during Modi's rule there was no Wakf Minister. This means that CM himself was holding Wakf portfolio.
This is applicable to many other Congress and BJP ruled states too.

Here DC discharging his duty in official capacity and as a DC it is precedent. He is the one of the organizer in world famous MYSORE DASARA once up on a time...Also rendered his service in Kukke Subrmanya temple. Importantly, to give maximum security ,he ordered to install CCTV in temples of DK!!!

Sunil Kumar must understand that DC IBRAHIM rendered more service to Hindu religion than Sunil's BD...Creating a rift between the religion is core subject of SUNIL,BD and BJP.Dragging DC name in this trivial, BJP once again showed it's true colour.

    Mr Jeevan.
The amendment is not in favor to keep same religion member as head but to make the DC the head.
