Vijay Mallya submits Rs 4000 crore repayment plan to banks

New Delhi, Mar 30 (IT) : Industrialist Vijay Mallya, who owes more than Rs 9000 crore to a consortium of 17 banks, today submitted to the Supreme Court a repayment plan of Rs 4000 crore by September this year. The top court has asked the consortium led by the State Bank of India (SBI) to respond to the liquor baron's proposal.

Mallya's lawyer told the Supreme Court that he had two rounds of meeting through video conferencing with the banks after leaving India last month. "The media hype has vitiated the fair trail," he told the court from London.

In response, the banks are reported to have told the court that they need a week to look at the proposal. The consortium also said it would have been better if Mallya was in India.

The next hearing in the matter has been fixed for April 7.

Mallya, promoter of long-grounded Kingfisher Airlines, had left India on March 2. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier issued summons to Mallya for "personal appearance" on March 18 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). But the flamboyant business asked for a date in April, making it clear that he would not be able to appear before that.

Mallya, who is currently in the United Kingdom and is being sought out in India over charges of money laundering, claimed that the banks gave him loans after evaluating all aspects and asserted that he is not trying to evade the law enforcement agencies but is on a personal visit.

Earlier today, the 60-year-old businessman said his son Siddharth should not be dragged into any controversy. "My son Sid does not deserve all this hatred and abuse. He has had nothing to do with my business. Shower abuse on me if you must but not him. Slam me if you must but not a young man," Mallya said in a series of tweets.

We should have some respect towards him and should appreciate that he is willing to repay the loan. Banks should accept this proposal and give some more time to repay the complete amount. All banks should know that money given as loan is always under risk..things like this can happen in any business, since he was involved in big business he has more debt..

Mr Mallya's plan should be accepted by the banks as there are many people working in his firm. A deadline should be set for repayment of the balance amount and no compromise should be made. The banks should take "Every pound of flesh without shedding a of blood" - it should be a Win Win situation for both and the country.

Earlier, it had been reported that Mallya had offered Rs 2,000 crore as a settlement amount, but when the bankers rejected the offer he increased it to Rs 4,000 crore. Clearly if Mallya can jump in increments of Rs 2,000 crore he has the money and is playing with the banks on who will blink first.

He is a Rajyasabha MP by the support of Karnataka BJP MLA's and few JDS MLA's.
Imagine what would have the BJP done if he was a MP by the support of Congress.
He is a smart player ,on the video conference you cannot bargain with him much he can simply switch of the camera.
Now the Banks have to agree with 4000 crores and close the deal,if they fail then court cases will be another 10 years or more.
Once the Bank agree the deal he will come back by a charter flight and same BJP MLA's will vote him again to Rajyasabha because they will get in crores.

When he first fled the country, VM said that he is out on a 'international business trip'.

Now, he says that he is out on a 'personal visit'???

In any case, VM, the undisputed 'King of Good Times', knows the weaknesses in the Indian financial/banking/legal system and definitely knows how to prolong the matter and evade the evil consequences of his 'good times'.

Hope the Central Govt. takes this opportunity, to clean up our entire banking/legal/political system of all the loopholes and vested interests.

Our entire banking system & economy are in a big mess. Hope lessons will be learnt the hard way, and no one will dare to take the system for a ride, in future!

Mallya will not return. Banks have an option now. Except 4K crores and agree to withdraw all cases. Or insist on full payment and probably get nothing!!

At least he is paying this much. There are many bigger loan accounts where banks will not get anything. I am not defending Mallya though.

I hope banks will take a practical approach.

@Ramdas Kini: 1. The amount of interest that banks get with huge loans is nothing when compared to your 1 lakh. 2. Banks depends on big players for their survival, not on common man 3. As someone pointed out, whether Mallya is holding banks for ransom or not, if they refuse the deal, they probably loose that amount too because another fugitive Lalit Modi is already made everyone fool and the present government helped him on humanitarian ground. 4. Mallya who is a Rajya Sabha MP with BJP support might get more help on humanitarian help from his friends who include Ambani and Adani other than Lalit Modi himself.

These loans were given by the UPA Govt.when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. Wasn't he aware of it or was he kept in the dark. Was he the boss of all those nationalised banks which lent Mallya the money ? Did he at that time inform Parliament about it ? Why didn't he take lawful action ? And now Arun Jaitley as Finance Minister ? Why was the CBI and ED quiet ? Who asked them to be quiet ? How did they allow Mallya to leave the country ? The Supreme Court should get to these points as well and nail / jail the political culprits.

Mallya has no option but to settle debt as he was the guarantor to the loans . His airline failed partly due to mismanagement and partly due to hostile environment of airline industry during that period Air India is still making huge losses and could not have sustained but for generous pumping of funds by the government. Spicejet was saved from the brink of collapse by new promoter. Jet was bailed out by Ethiad, While making the settlement, the banks should also think positively and recover the best part of their loans leaving some leeway for Mr Mallya for respectful exit. This episode has already created ripple in the market and many such high profile promoters are looking out for bailout from the similar situations i.e JP associates was looking for selling out their entire cement portfolio for Rs16500 cr to Ultratech to clear debt of Rs23000 cr. Essar steel, having debt of Rs.40000 crores, is ready for sell out and the lenders are in the look out for prospective buyers which include Tata Steel and JSW. Most of the infra companies like GVK GMR are making frantic efforts to sell their assets to clear the debts to the banks. Now, Mallya episode has made Corporates to understand that it is inevitable settle bank debts. before they are exposed

    1) This will set a dangerous precedent for other large corporate defaulters. These companies can also move the Supreme Court and make similar proposals citing the Kingfisher case to come out of their debt. Remember, Total NPA said to be around 14 Lakh Cr.

2)This is not a simple case of loan Default, its a complicated case of, Fraud, Money laundering, Tax evasion and loan default

There should be some unknown conspiracy in Mallya's current proposal to settle part of the debts.
Business minded people always workout strategy or a plan how to benefit from their business venture and Mr. Mallya has already proved in his capacity as a successful entrepreneur.
Without some purpose he would not have opened the doors for such negotiations.
