Mangalore: Three-day National-level 'Agno Fest 07' Opens at St Agnes

Mangalore, Oct 4: Union minister for labour and employment Oscar Fernandes declared open 'Agno Fest 07', a three-day national-level intercollegiate fest in the college premises at Bendur here.
The underlying theme of the fest is 'Anveshana', representing Discovery of the Self. As the theme and buzzline implies, it emphasizes the indomitable spirit of the human soul and provides the students with an opportunity to unleash the matchless inspiration and creativity lying latent within the youths.
DK district home guards commandant Dr Bellippady Shivaprasad Rai was the guest of honour on the occasion.
After unveiling the trophy to be given to the champions of the event, Fernandes, displayed his skill in playing the mouth organ, which is one of his favourite hobbies. It was a patriotic tune from an Hindi movie that he played -'Aao bachcho tum sikha den....vande mataram' which invited an inspired, thunderous applause from the audience, made almost entirely of youth. Changing of pitch and musical note in sequence was a special feature of his rendition.
Fernandes, in his inaugural speech, hailed the heights scaled by St Agnes College, by virtue of dedicated service on the part of the Apostolic Carmel congregation all through the past decades. He said this year being special one, the 60th anniversary of Independence, it was everyone's duty to recall the sacrifices made by the freedom-fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi. When the American War of Independence was won after a heavy exchange of gunfire, the Indian independence, in contrast, was won with a more powerful weapon of non-violence, he stressed.
He also pointed out that in the Indian struggle of Independence more people died because it was a one-way gunfire, esp. in Jallianwalla Bagh massacre. He further drew attention to the fact that only 7% of India's children and youth get education. However, in contrast to the West, India's majority is made of youth, which is the wealth of the country. The India of today is a strong and resurgent India, he added.
When students of distant colleges had come here to present their talents and skills and also glimpses of culture, it was an opportunity to understand each other better, and in this direction, other institutions should follow the example set by St Agnes College in organizing an event of this kind, he said in conclusion.
Dr Shivaprasad Rai, citing the exemplary life of service lived by Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, praised the institution for the service to the society in the field of education. He complimented the college for providing a forum to students from different parts of India to showcase their potential.
Former principal of the college and Karnataka provincial of AC congregation Sr Olivia, who also was one of the guests on the occasion, expressed special happiness over the fact that Oscar Fernandes and Dr Rai, whose spouses were her past students, shared the dais with her together.
Principal Dr Sr Prem D'Souza also spoke on the occasion. Sr Olivia, staff coordinator Deviprabha, student coordinators Lakshmi Shenoy and Manjusha Hebbar were on the dais.
Lecturer Avitha welcomed the audience. Namrata Hegde compered the event. Manjusha Hebbar proposed a vote of thanks.
Earlier the students of the college sang an invocation song and dancers led by Manjusha Hebbar presented fusion-based welcome song.
About the event
'Anveshana', to be held from October 4 to 6, is aimed at drawing students of every faculty to come together, to seek, to strive, and to learn by participating in various creative events like Parichay (Ice-breaker), Upahasvana (Best comedy show), Alankara (Window-dressing), Vishwa Sanskriti (Variety entertainment), Athiranjana (Mad Ad), Adhivijjana (Quiz), Avalalana (Movie Spoof), Adhikarana (Mock Court), Abhinaya (Street-play), Noopura (Contemporary Dance), Patrika (Newsletter) and Sadhri (Best Personality).
The organizers have received an overwhelming response, with 15 colleges from states far and near having enrolled and confirmed their participation.
