Mangalore, Oct 5:
The afternoon of Friday October 5 gave a festive look to the premises of Lourdes Central School as Ratnakar Nayak, NCC aero-modelling instructor at NCC Air Wing, controlled the movements of a model helicopter by a remote control facility.

He successfully controlled the movements of a model aero-plane which could not take off because of the rough ground that failed to play the role of a runway.

"The show was organized mainly to inspire young and inquisitive minds towards the scientific innovations. It has been planned to organize more similar model shows and training programme on aero-modelling at the end of the academic year to encourage scientific temper in the growing minds, said Grace Noronha," principal, Lourdes Central School.

Ratnakar Nayak hails from Karkala. He studied at Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala. He has not had any formal graduation either in aeronautics or mechanical engineering. The knowledge he has gained is purely from his involvement in the telecast of technical related programmes on channels like Discovery, which he has been watching for more than six years, Prakash, an aircraft engineer who has been helping Nayak in the endeavour briefed to Daijiworld.

Nayak indeed deserves praised as he was self-trained in assembling the spare parts to make models and making them fly in the air for long durations. The entire credit of success of the show must go to the details downloaded from the Wweb and his creative faculties, the aircraft engineer further said.

Delineating the mechanism of the model helicopter and the model aeroplane, the instructor outlined that the fuel capacity of the tank is 350 ml, whereas the quantity of fuel can keep a model aeroplane airborne for over 40 minutes, he added.
