Bhatkal: Ismail Musba's arrest and release - Sleuths falter again

Daijiworld Media Network - Bhatkal (SP)

Bhatkal, Apr 9: The two-day high drama following the whisking away of Ismail Musba Rawoof (34) by the investigating agencies for interrogation by projecting him as a suspect, only to release him later, has once again brought Bhatkal to limelight. Musba, who was to go to Dubai by a flight from Pune, was released after the agencies declared him innocent.

Officials are now trying to seek shelter under the cover of 'mistaken identity' claim for this fiasco, it is learnt. Notably, for the second time the investigating officials have stumbled after trying to kick up a din by relying perhaps entirely on the notorious tag the town had earned in the past.

Pune and Bhatkal appear to be not supplementing each other well, going by the past experience. Relating to the German Bakery blast at Pune, Abdul Samad from Mugdam Colony here had been arrested by Anti-Terrorist Squad sleuths from Mumbai in 2010 from Mangaluru international airport. Rumours ran thick and thin then about Samad having been sighted in the CCTV footage of German Bakery. Unsubstantiated stories about Samad claimed that he was active in Indian Mujahideen organization and that he was in possession of arms.

Strangely, the then union home minister, Chidambaram, relying on the claims of the investigating officers, even went to the extent of announcing that the officials had arrested the mastermind behind German Bakery blast. On their part, family members of Samad produced before the media a video of Samad taking part in a marriage programme here during the period the blast occurred at Pune. The officials let off Samad after questioning him persistently for 40 days. Even in that case, the officials put forth forward the 'mistaken identity' theory. Thereafter, the allegation about the said blast was shifted to his brother, Ahmed Siddibapa alias Yasin Bhatkal, who is currently in jail.

It is said that the officials have been trying hard to prove the said allegation. The recent victim of this attitude of the agencies was Ismail Musba, resident of Ameenuddin Road here. Ismail got spotted because his name also comes with addition of Abdul Rawoof.

NIA officials say that they had questioned 24 Indian youths who had clearly leaned towards ISIS. One among them, Mudabeer Sheikh, had mentioned the name of Rawoof. Ismail's father's name is Abdul Rawoof. For this reason, Ismail was taken into custody believing him to be the same Rawoof, it is said.

Some sources claim that the fact that Ismail happened to be hailing from Bhatkal got the attention of some officials, who have been over-enthusiastic in their mission to eye this town with suspicion. The officials realized their folly after questioning the youth. Ismail, who had planned to visit Dubai in search of job, is in a dilemma about continuing with his hunt for job.

Ismail reached his home on Friday April 8.

Majlis-e-Islah-wa-Tanzeem here, which happens to be the leading social organization of the Muslims from this region, has branded this as careless conduct of top investigating agencies of the country, terming it as a dangerous development. Spokesperson of the organization, Haneef Shabab, noted that it is the duty of every citizen of the country to stay committed to national security. He feels that arresting of innocent people by terming them as suspects, coming out with unreliable stories about them, and making efforts to link them with ISIS is an insult to the people of Bhatkal. He has questioned the inability of the agencies which claims to have issued lookout notice three to four months back, and then failing to properly identify the accused.

While there is no doubt that investigation officials need to do their duty and in the process may find themselves questioning the wrong persons, stress should also be laid on the fact that innocents should not be made to go through trauma that they may never forget in a lifetime. When reputation and future of individuals and families are stake, it is best to maintain secrecy of operation until the officials are sure that they have caught the right person. Unncessarily giving statements to the media and then terming it 'mistaken identity' when they falter is not correct, as by then the damage would already have been done to the family involved.

JUST see number of accused arrested and acquitted later but still some officials are not coming out from their prejudiced mindset.See the way baliga murder case in mangalore but police or investigation officers never smell of this yuva brigade leader just because he is not belongs to minority community. If the same investigation officers concentrate on coastal districts on terrorists better get good result in cotrolling communal clashes which the only obstacle to our matured social growth rather than going behind AIRPORT ARREST DRAMA.Why vijaya malya left freely to london even though it was informed to police officials by airport attendants before departing the flight.IT MAY BE LOOKS LIKE DEFFERRANT FACE OF CRIME BUT THE APPROACH OF AUTHORITIES IS A MATTER OF CONCERN

    Arresting on suspicion is alright.

At the same time if they are innocent and wrongly arrested the NIA should pay compensations to the arrested because he has lost his planning of his life, job prospects, mental tensions of himself and his parents and inuring loss of money to know what and how to release arrested on suspicion by the accused family.

Why does NIA make public announcements if they are not sure if the arrested one is the actual wanted person? One the one hand it causes undue suffering to the innocent and on the other it gives an opportunity to the real culprit to be more alert or he may even flee the country in disguise. Above all it measures the competency of our security agencies.

For National security, if you want to detain and interrogate someone, it's fine, it's understood. But when you are not sure who the person is, why did you leak to the press all false information about him?
Looks like NIA does work worth 50 paise and wants publicity worth 10 rupees...

Those who say mistaken identity is not 'crime and lapse' put yourselves in the shoes of these young men and speak out. Their career, future, reputation everything is ruined because of this 'mistaken identity'. Whether 2 days or 2 years, once you are in 'jail' the society does not accept you wholeheartedly. If the sleuths weren't sure, then why did they pose before media and claim that they caught hold of 'dreaded terrorist'? Are the Agencies and sleuths too playing to the gallery, trying to appease their political masters and fickle-minded extremists? Would one ‘sorry’ erase this entire episode which has tarnished and targeted him and his family as well? When we are at wrong, Law punishes us but when the Law and the Law-keepers themselves are on the wrong side, who should be blamed and who should be punished? This is not one instance. We have hundreds of youth languishing in various jails across our country as 'under-trials' for years on 'terror charges'. Whenever a blast or terror act takes place, hundreds of Muslim youth from the neighbouring community are taken into custody on 'suspicion' when in actual the real masterminds behind these dastardly acts remain at large. They are interrogated, beaten up, their families haunted, reputation tarnished, character is assassinated and after 4-5 years, they are acquitted because they were never 'terrorists'. Imagine what would be their situation and reaction? Would they ever be able to trust the Law and the law-keepers? Would they be able to make a smooth entry back into the mainstream without being taunted, haunted and jeered at? It would take herculean human efforts and extraordinary inner strength to forget such an episode and move on. Most of the times these young men are not able to handle this blemish on themselves and their family and start nurturing so much of hatred and anger against the society and the Law which then turns them into anti-nationals and criminals.

..mistake indentity is not lapse or crime..Intelligence agencies searching needle in haystack..we only know about blasts/kiilings but we dont know have many has been foiled by agencies..inconvenience happens, we may suffer but its a little sacrifice for our own safety..but to hide their lapse, if agencies put behind bar innocents permanently then its a crime..in above case or in Bajpe case both are released after interrogation..if just they are targetting some one they would have created some fake evidneces, its not the case..let us not forget that TANZIL AHMED was shot dead for protecting us, he may have joined some other lucrative provate jobs rather than BSF/NIA..let us not undermine their sacrifice for few incidents..in every country it happens, in free & fare country USA even school kids are arrested..

True, even school kids are arrested, BUT not tortured like 12 years in Akshamdam attack, 6 years in Hyderabad blasts. And we do not have any clue as to who carried out these two blasts and Ajmer blast....This is the achievement of our intelligence Agencies / law system / police.....Keep it up.... Do not be after Lalit Modi, Mallaya, Shenoy mamu, Criminals of Babri demolition, gujrat riots, sikh riots, Mumbai blasts and criminals of thousands of communal riots.....That is our DNA...

In the case of Akshamdham attack, it took 12 years for the judiciary and police to acquit the accused as INNOCENTS..... No one knows who carried out Hyderabad and Ajmer blasts....But the accused were acquitted as INNOCENTS after many many years....This is the HUTTU GUNA of law system and Police.
In all the cases the accused had to undergo severe torture before getting acquitted..The bent tails can never be straightened....

National security is of utmost important for sure. No doubt that intelligence agencies must carry on their duties. Interrogating a person on suspicion is also fine. But, why come to a conclusion before proving anything. Why are they hurrying to release false news to media?
They should learn from other developed countries.
PM Modi was asking Indian diaspora there few day ago if they are feeling proud to be called Indians?

Please do not hold NIA guilty. They were just doing their duty, questioning the suspects.
I would have been really good if NIA can identify terrorists directly but unfortunately they don't come with a terrorist tag on their forehead. Terrorists look like one among you and me ofcourse usually with a beard, so NIA need to suspect and question randomly.

Because of this, we feel safe in India.

@Shankar, Terrorists look like one among you and me ofcourse usually with a beard..really?? I saw someone with beard but wearing salwar running from Ram Lila maidan and police still not able to arrest him. @ Ramesh, would you agree with NIA if they arrest you or your closed one just because name or appearance? Arresting is one thing but trying to make him criminal is another thing.
