Mangaluru: Veteran Konkani writer Lancy Pinto Nayak passes away

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Veteran Konkani writer, playwright and activist Lancy Pinto Nayak passed away on Sunday, April 10 in the city. He was 60.

Incidentally, his demise came only three days after the release of his latest novel 'Sukhidhad' in a function at Mangalore University on April 7. He was actively interacting with friends and well-wishers till the end, and in fact, had last updated his Facebook page at 11.06 pm on Saturday April 9.

Born on December 13, 1955 in Kinnigoli, his first story was published in the year 1972 in 'Mithr' weekly. Over the years, he wrote hundreds of short stories, 11 novels, 33 Konkani stage plays/skits, 100 articles, poems, reviews and interviews.

His novel ‘Cheddum’ was rewarded with the late Louis Mascarenhas Birth Centenary Award in 1989, ‘Pattim Golfak’ won the award from Konkani Bhasha Mandal Goa in 1989 and ‘Vidhov’ won 2 awards, Karnataka Sahitya Academy award and the Late Louis Mascarenhas Birth Centenary award in 1991. His popular drama ‘Airik Soirik’ won prizes from Kala Sampath Mangalore. In addition the same stage play was also awarded by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Award and Dr TMA Foundation book award in 1997. In 2010, Daiji Dubai honoured him with its Literary Award. 

He breathed his last due to brain haemorrhage he suffered. He was admitted into a private hospital.

He was a resident of Kulshekar. He was in Kuwait for the past few years and came back to Mangaluru for good just a few weeks ago.

He leaves behind his wife Jacintha, son Dagny Ian Pinto and daughter Daphny Ruweena Pinto.

    Back in the 90's the book " vidhov ” won 2 critical awards and came as serial story in leading konkani magazine , after reading this i became big fan of him .     I had the privilege of being one of his close friend during my school days. He always had an advise for me when needed. His thought provoking articles, stories and plays entertained many. His end is a great loss for Konkani literature.Feel extremely distressed for not being able to meet him.

    Very sad ......hard to believe….. the sudden death of our Guruji Lancy Pinto Nayak. He was a man of his own, and creative thinker, organizer, Social thinker. We are proud to have such a human, a well talented personality... We are always thankful to him for his blessings, support and guidance for all occasions. I always remember his words to share here is that “ To achieve something…. Do not say that, I don’t have time….. We can take time if we have the will to do “. I did follow it for some extent to achieve my simple, sincere, successful ambition that was later appreciated by him. We really miss you sir. Our prayers are with you and heartfelt condolences for those left behind.

    Untimely call - but no one has a choice ?!!
    I remember Lancy's strong initiatives in my house in Riyadh during Aug'89 which was a Foundation meeting from which Saudi Konkan Association Riyadh (SKAR) originated. Lancy was one of the 'Founder member' of SKAR. Heartfelt condolences to the family. May his soul RIP.

    This is a very sad news to me on a personal level since he was a very good friend of mine. He was the President and I was the General Secretary of the Writers Forum, Kuwait and worked like hand and gloves for two years. Presently, I am the President of WFK. I had the opportunity to meet Jacintha and their daughter too in Kuwait. His sudden demise has given a shock to me and he will be dearly missed. May his soul rest in peace.     Lancy Uncle was a great source of inspiration for all Konkani drama lovers born and raised under the banner of Cordel Parish, his feedback, direction and guidance for participants in Konkani plays, drama's and inter parish competitions nurtured young talents in Konkani, the Konkani theatre workshop conducted in Qatar a few years ago gave an insight to the participants to know more on acting and at the same time showed his love for our mother tongue.

    Shocking. Lancy Bab was my mentor. He was continuously guiding me through Facebook and what'sapp. Very humble and down to earth.     We were old friends, when it came to Drama we were competitors... but respected each other. I had designed few covers for his novels. In Doha I attended his theatre training camp. Many good memories. Last one was, he had come to watch our rehearsal for 'Parat Ek Pavtim' just a month back. As usual he had his views...then we had planned to get together and do something for Theatre, which he loved the most... Now our dreams will remain as dreams... My heartfelt condolences go to his sorrowing family, specially to Jessie and children. May God rest his soul in peace.

    What a shocking news about Lancys death. Really cant believe this. We met at Samanwaya function and had a chat with other writers who were present there. Also saw him recently at the time of his book release at Mangalore University. But within 3 days he left us all.     Lancy Pinto Nayak.On 7th April I was present when his new novel 'Sukidadd' is released at Karnataka Konkani Sahitya programme helt at Ravindra Kala Mantap.Fr.Alwyn Serrao,Dr.Edward Nazareth,Donald Pereira and I was sitting with Lancy.Later we both left the hall saying 'bye' to each other.This morning I was shocked when Dr.Edward Nazareth called me from Hubli and informed me about Lancy's critical condition.And in the evening I got the sad news from Leslie Rego.Deepest sympathies to his wife Jessy, children Dagney and Daphney and all the members of the bereaved family.May the departed soul rest in Peace.
