Udupi, Apr 11: If you are crazy about selfies, here's something with which you can take selfies of not only yourself, not just of a group, but probably of an entire joint family!

A youngster from Mangaluru, studying in Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal here, on Monday April 11 had a shot at Guinness World Record, by developing what is said to be the longest selfie stick.

Arman, son of Mohammed Soorinje, a resident near Hampankatta, Mangaluru, has developed a selfie stick measuring a whopping 10.39 metres.

The current Guinness record for the longest selfie stick is 8.53 metres. A normal selfie stick measures about one metre.

The 21-year-old Arman, a VI semester student of electrical and electronics engineering at MIT, demonstrated his gadget at Manipal MIT campus.

Arman said that he first attempted to build a selfie stick of 9 metres, and ended up with one that is 10.39 metres, out of which the length of the stick is 10.36 metre and the remaining forms the phone holder. He first tried with a steel rod, but as it failed, he shifted to aluminium and succeeded. It took him about a month to build and test it.

His father Mohammed, himself an electrical engineer, encouraged Arman to go for the Guinness record and build the selfie stick. MIT lecturers guided him in the project while his friends egged him on.

On Monday, he demonstrated his project in the presence of Manipal University registrar Dr G K Prabhu, lecturers Dr Narayana Shenoy, Prof B K Singh, MIT joint director Prof B H V, and DySP S J Kumaraswamy, and Badagabettu Credit Cooperative Society general manager Jayakar Shetty Indrali.

Prof Nagaraj of MIT civil engineering department shot a video of the demonstration and recorded details in order to submit the project to Guinness World Records committee for approval of the record.

I honestly respect his efforts and creativity. We should encourage them to do something useful for the society. Selfies already taken many live and stick will take some more . We have lot of hidden talents if it comes out good for tha society and proper guidance can bring something great. Please dont work behind mobile and facebook. Think something beyond that.
