Mangaluru, Apr 13: A day after the alleged murder of fisherman Raju Kotian near Kotepura in Ullal near here, members of the Mogaveera community on Wednesday April 13 staged a strong protest by placing Raju's body in front of the Ullal police station.

Raju Kotian (41), a resident of Mogaveerapatna near Kotepura, was found dead on Tuesday April 12 with his face smashed. It was alleged to be a case of murder. The same evening, women from Mogaveera community had gheraoed Ullal police station and urged the police to arrest the culprits within 24 hours.

On Wednesday, Raju's body was taken in a procession from his house to the Ullal police station via sea road and Ullal junction. The protestors placed the body in front of the police station and expressed ire against the cops.

"Despite repeated atrocities against the Mogaveera community in Ullal, the police have not arrested the accused so far. Incidents of stabbing, assault and damage to houses have been occuring frequently, but the police have still not traced the culprits. But when there is any allegation against a Mogaveera, the police barge into the house and make arrests. Why have the same police not arrested anyone for Raju Kotian's murder?" the protestors said.

Demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lac for Raju Kotian's family, president of Ullal Mogaveera Samaj Bharat Kumar said, "Raju Kotian was an innocent person who worked hard for his living. If you see the condition of his family you would shed not tears but blood. Raju had taken the responsibility of his entire family including his physically challenged brother. But now the bereaved family is in dire straits. The government should immediately provide a compensation of Rs 50 lac to the family."

More than a thousand people participated in the funeral procession and the protest, shouting slogans against the state government.

The police deployed four KSRP teams to prevent any untoward incident. DCP K M Shantaraju, ASPs Kalyan Shetty, Uday M Nayak, Madan Gaonkar, CCB police, Konaje and Ullal police teams were also present.

Five in custody: In connection with the case, the police on Wednesday morning took four suspects into custody. The total number of suspects in custody is now five, with one being taken in on April 12 evening.

U T Khader visits: Earlier in the day, health minister and MLA U T Khader visited the hospital in Deralakatte where Raju's body had been kept and paid his last respects. He said that he has already instructed the higher police officers to form a special police team to investigate the case. He also requested the people to maintain peace and cooperate with the police and not do anything that would disrupt the probe.

RIP Raju anna... so comment for this article but rare number of RIP from the viewers, why is that? because of he not belongs to minority community? shame on u guys who comment without knowing the actual facts personally as well as entire ullal region. The person who killed is not belongs to your family member so you are commenting like this... think the situation of Raju's family member. Police will stop drugs activity which is easily running in entire DK, and arrest the murderers.....

some people asking why no protest for baliga & harish case. any one can do the protest & nobody restricted. protest is required only when the investigation is in wrong path due to pressure from politician or somebody. votebank politics not good for country. treat people equally.

What brand of politics is being played in DK? On what grounds are these protests held carrying funeral processions? Aren’t these the same people who did not even bother to shed one tear at the gruesome murder of RTI activist Baliga a few days ago? Why no one demanded even Rs 50000 compensation to Baliga’s family whom he was the sole bread winner? So who decides as to whose funeral procession must be held and whose death is brushed off? Why all these people silent in Vinayaka Baliga case but are latching on to other cases where the reason, motive and way of death is yet to be established? Is silence in Baliga murder case because the prime accused is the leader of a community and group that takes pride in calling itself as the ‘promoter and protector’ of a certain community and religion?

Murder of anyone is gruesome and condemnable. The culprits must be apprehended and tried as per the Law of the land without delay. But I am confused as to why the murder of some makes such noise, evoke huge protest but of others is just swept under the carpet, even if the victims are from the same community? In this particular case are the protests held because a person hailing from a Majority community has been murdered in an area dominated by Minority community and that the MLA of the area too happens to be the member of Minority community? Who is provoking the people and why, to protest against some crime on a particular day and but then keep quiet when something similar happens some other day? It shows clearly that there are some forces which are hell bent on causing rift in the Mangalorean society, who take sadistic pleasure in dividing the people and then watch them fight over some issue resulting in bloodshed, animosity and tensions.

Vote for Congress to commit more atrocities on you & all of us. Their Minority appeasement policy has left this state a hell since 2013. Cow thieves, Goons, Rapists, Chain snatchers, murderers roaming freely in the streets of Karnataka. No Control at all, i feel the police should resign enmass since they were not allowed to do their duty by the corrupt Politicians.
