Mangaluru, Apr 15: There has been an alarming increase in the number of chain snatching incidents in the city and surrounding places of late, giving an indication about gangs of chain snatchers being active in the region.

An unidentified person snatched away three golden chains from the neck of a woman, identified as Usha M Kini, near car street here. The woman, residing near Lord Vekataramana temple at car street, was returning home after attending car festival at Dongerkery on the night of Wednesday April 13 along with her neighbours, when an unidentified person who came from behind suddenly approached her near Saraswati Hall, yanked a golden Karimani weighing 28 grams, coral chain weighing 42 grams and another gold chain weighing 56 grams, before fleeing in the company of another person.

The value of ornaments lost in this incident has been put at Rs 3.42 lac. A case stands registered in the city (east) police station about the theft.

In the other incident which occurred near the KSRTC bus stand at Bijai, an unidentified youth snatched away a chain worn around her neck by another woman.

Malini Shetty (57), resident of Ballal Bagh, said that she was returning home after visiting a bank located near KSRTC bus stand, when a youth spoke to her on the pretext of seeking directions towards a location. He instantly tried to snatch a chain away. In spite of the fact that Malini resisted the effort, he succeeded in pushing her down, and snatching away the gold chain, it is gathered.

    There was a time as I was small,women who didnt have Gold ornaments,to attend a wedding ,used to borrow from neighbours either earrings and kariamani,and return immidiately after the functions.Now People have ornaments,want to Show their collection,go careless with it at night ,day.It should be a warning to all ,dont Show outside what are your wealth.or travel with a taxi,when worn,later put it in Hand bag.Why should we make them easy to snatch our hard earned valueables?Mostly village women want when a Chance to goout wear it and loose it.sad.Best wear immitations.THey are at present look just like the originals.even better.

    It is a true thing.... In 1950-60 people were not having gold ornaments.. Even our neighbors used to take my mothers ornaments for the marriage functions. Now it is show business i.e. I got this much, my Husband brought this gold set from middle east or so on....I visited so many European and American countries, but these ladies wear only either artificial gold or no ornaments.

    When rich people wear immitations it look gracious and original. Ib case of others make out immediately..thru neighbours only. That's why everytime wants to stick to originals only. Nearby knows very well..what gold possession are with them. Cannot fool.

    This happened once upon a time in Mumbai it seems.
    One day , a chain snatcher , snatches a necklace from a woman ,travelling regularly in a local train and flees.She and her colleagues have a good laugh over the incident. They were all smart. They used to wear artificial gold ornaments only.
    Next day same time, same train the chain snatcher appears, slaps the woman with artificial ornament tightly and flees.
    This is some revenge story.
    Is it not?
    This was decades back. Here women still show off at night ceremonies and all that. A sure recipe for disaster. What say you?

    Metropoltian women's are smart to wear Roll-Gold ornaments. In villages people prefer to have actual. Even normal grams are also worth lakhs.

    Probably the work of those 200 came from Rajastan, of criminal background.

    Be watchful and if possible, wear fake ornaments and flaunt them royally !

    Are you sure..chain snatchers are from rajasthan. It means let police investigate them first. In more of cases chain snatching done by local people itself as well from Iranian Gang.

    Our ladies want more gold to wear... some people want more children.... some people want more wife.... These are all our customs???? Good for Robers. If Government says don't wear more gold or have only limited children or have only one wife, people got objection... they will bring religion, tradition etc. Now whoever objecting are suffering??

    There was some gap for this chain snatching. No such cases were reported. But now this has cropped again. Our Police Commissioner has to take stern action against these chain snatchers and put full stop for such activities.
