Mangaluru: Woman suffering from hand pain dies, medical negligence alleged

Mangaluru, Apr 17: A woman who got admitted to a private hospital for an operation for pain in the hand died, allegedly due to medical negligence. Following her death, people protested in front of a clinic on Saturday April 16, with her body.

Saraswati, wife of late Parameshwara from Gandhi Nagar in Thokkottu, is the deceased.

Saraswati had gone to Spoorthi Polyclinic at Thokkottu on April 6 for treatment of pain in her hand. She had developed the pain while unloading sand the previous day. The doctor who treated her asked her to get admitted to a private hospital in Deralakatte and she was admitted there on April 9.

The doctors who examined at the private hospital told Saraswati that she had to undergo an operation. After the operation on April 10 at 3 pm, she was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and her relatives were told that some of her organs were not functioning. When her relatives insisted that she should be taken to another hospital, the hospital staff allegedly said that she was in a serious condition and could not be shifted. On April 14, the hospital announced that she was no more, said her relatives speaking to the media.

A police complaint was lodged in Ullal police station alleging medical negligence.

Before the last rites on Saturday, around 100 people including Saraswati's relatives gathered in front of Spoorthi Polyclinic with the body and protested.

Rohith Ullal, honourary advisor of Koragajja Seva Samiti, said, "Some doctors play with the lives of people to make money. It is totally wrong to charge Rs 1,20,000 for a patient who just had pain in the hand. A law should be made to install cameras in all ICUs. The doctor’s attitude is a violation of the social justice system."

Block Congress general secretary Murali Mohan Salian said, "A place that is supposed to save lives is in the business of killing a healthy person. A patient has to gain consciousness within one hour after the operation. But the woman was kept in the ICU for four days. The hospital cheated the relatives of the woman by charging over Rs one lac. The doctor concerned should be arrested immediately. The government should cancel his licence."

The deceased leaves behind a daughter and three sons.

Dalit Sangarsha Samiti, Congress, BJP and CPI (M) members also participated in the protest.

    We cannot jump into conclusion before we know the facts.
    But what i have observed is these days many doctors do not talk or explain the patient or their relatives about the disease and the treatment which they are going to perform before they treat. It is very important to explain these things so there is no confusion. Even while diagnosing many doctors hardly talk to patient to know the conditions. Doctors please take note of this and help the patients. We all know that doctors profession is a noble profession

    Its really paining to hear. Did they really operated hand or else where with confusion. Those doctors who got through Merit seat may not do such wrong things. May be the(Just pass) payment seat doctor performed this type of surgery.Now the fee runs into crores for payment seat in some medical colleges. What else we can expect from them ?

    Very sorry to hear that woman suffering from hand pain dies, supposed to be medical negligence. As someone above rightly said in his comment, whether the patient has been shifted to ICU before or after the operation i.e after she died.
    Now the hospital has become a commercial centre rather than professional centre. Their aim is to lure the money from the patient party by hook or crook in the pretext of so many unwanted tests, scanning etc.
    Even after the death of the patient, they shift the patient to ICU/CCU by convincing the patient party with so many reasons for few more days in order to charge hefty amount. Their main intention is to lure the money from the patient party. This is what the trend prevailing now in most of the hospitals, clinics and polyclinics etc.
    Even I heard that doctors in some reputed hospitals have been instructed or set certain amount of target to collect money from the patient party in a month to cover up their salary, hospital maintenance cost, cost of the instruments,devices,machines etc they purchased for the hospital. These are some of the ploys adopted by some hospitals, clinics and poly clinics. We cannot ask any question with them. They are the superiors but at the cost of the patients. No consideration, sympathy. Doctors are bound to obey the instructions of their administration.
    In order to save the poor patient, patient’s party has to struggle to pay the exorbitant amount whatever the hospital asked to pay. This is how the hospital works.

    Find out after the operation they shifted the patient to the ICU or the dead body of the patient? This too is possible to extract more money. Police should perform post mortem to find out real cause of death and to see no vital organs are missing!

    replying to your comment. I would like to say, before commenting you people should know what is the cause for her hand pain. Does not matter wether it is just hand. Some of the infections so fast that the organs start to fail within no time. People should realize the new diseases. We are still in the past centuries. I am a nurse in the operating room and the patient with infections come to us you an not even imagine. Just a small pimple on your groin area can lead you to have leg amputated. Just to be careful before commenting on anything.please stop all this

    Patient went to clinic on 6th admitted on 9th? She went for a picnic for 3 days?
    One can get a heart attack at home... Office...on road... But can't get heart attack in hospital?
    Without knowing the details blaming the doctors is not correct... And mob always creates confusion and pathetic way of dealing...
    Sad that lady passed away but kindly don't go with earsay.... All of you must have a doctor friend ask them the possibilities...

    Someone commented docs loot with unwanted investigation.... Not true sir.... Patients can always refuse and docs take the signature as proof.... Heart pain can even radiate to hand... One maybe having underlying undiagnosed conditions as well...all these tobe taken into account before comment

    First heartfelt sympathies to Saraswati's family. Everyone wants to become super rich overnight. Does anyone think that people who start hospitals and polyclinics do it for the benefit of the society, they only start one to loot and make money from the poor people and general public at large. Once you go to a doctor they ask you to do some tests, scans,MRI, etc. Earlier it was only X-RAY. It looks like doctors first try to recover their money spent on their studies. Later their life style by looting the poor public. Saddest part is we why faith in these doctors and treat them like demigods. We recently had seen the PUC chemistry paper leak out. We can imagine such doctors treating us who not only get the questions if they pay a little more even the answers and given to them. Only with a few lakhs someone can be admitted to a hospital. Why cannot our Govt. hospital improve,good and honest doctors treat the general public???

    Kusumji, Fully agree with your point of view. “Doctors should not be blamed without evidence”. If that is the case, why there is no any justification from the hospital so far? do you agree what happened is right? If this case was too complicated before the surgery, the doctor might have informed the concern family members about the seriousness and consequences of the surgery. 4 days to gain surgery look not justified. Let doctors come out of their justification, parallely autopsy shall be carried out.

    @Kusuma K.,Nellore,of course not all doctors make failure.and this doctor has never gave Explanation to the tragodie.I hardly experienced doctors ever agreed to the faults done.instead give excuses .Their insurance and Union supports them.As a laie one cant always prove them their faults.They too are humans,failure can occur.but why should stay to it?Here nobody knows what op,what went wrong ,is not known.RIP.Saraswatis Soul.

    Let Saraswathi's soul rest in peace.Now its kind of MEDICAL BUSINESS these days.For a simple fever and cold we are advised to do so called BLOOD TEST.....Rs 300-600.Then next is scanning Rs 2500-3000.During past we used to take some simple tablets and syrup,coconut,barley,moosambi juice ,hot water,Conji,to cure cold and fever.Now we have ANTIBIOTICS which cause weakness among most people.For injuries except fracture,we were made simple dressing after cleaning and had to take tablets for pain.Now everything goes with money.Patients don't know or understand what the hospitals are doing or billing.If we have insurance then its ok.In this case Rs 1 lakh 20 thousand bill for hand injury treatment.Just because they have expensive machinery,they can't charge poor patients like this.There should be special medical panel like Lokayuktha to check these things before situation goes out of control.I agree with Rohit Ullal's statement on this issue.

    Unfortunately in India the laws have been manipulated and favours only rich, higher class people Not for the common, poor.

    You should understand before agreeing for surgery that there might be sudden unpredictable complication with drugs due to anaphylatic reaction in any surgery even for small suturing.and 1.20lakh may be cost of medication and surgery.dont think that all this given to hospital for free by government like other country.
