India's first bullet train to travel under the sea near Thane creek

Mumbai, Apr 20 (FE) : Passengers will get the thrill of riding under the sea while travelling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the first bullet train of the country.

The 508 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor will have a 21 km long tunnel under the sea, said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the public transporter's ambitious bullet train project.

While most part of the corridor is proposed to be on the elevated track, there will be a stretch after Thane creek towards Virar which will go under the sea as per the detailed project report by JICA.

Estimated to cost about Rs 97,636 crore, 81 per cent of the funding for the project will come by way of a loan from Japan. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties.

It is a soft loan for 50 years at 0.1 per cent annual interest with 15 years moratorium, said the official.

Rolling stock and other equipment like signalling and power system will be imported from Japan as per the loan agreement.

The official said the loan agreement with Japan is slated to be signed by the end of the year and construction work is likely to begin by the end of 2018.

According top priority to the first of its kind project, railways has formed National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV), with a paid-up capital of Rs 500 crore.

A search committee comprising senior government officials including Cabinet Secretary, Chairman Railway Board and Secretary DOPT among others is on the job currently to select the Managing Director and five directors for the NHSRCL.

Railways has already allotted Rs 200 crore for the SPV. Maharashtra and Gujarat will have equity of 25 per cent each, while the Railways will have 50 per cent in the SPV.

The bullet train is expected to cover 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph.

At present, Duronto Express takes about seven hours to cover the distance between the two financial centres.

For timely completion of the project, a joint committee has been formed under the vice-chairman of NITI Aayog with the secretaries of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Departments of Economic Affairs and Foreign Ministry as its members along with the Railway Board Chairman.

First we need 24 hours water and electricity.Government can not provide enough water in the cities also forget about Villages. First let the government fulfill the basic needs, then go for luxury . If a person wants to go from mumbai to ahmedabad urgently, he can catch flight and go, why he need to wait for bullet train???? Let the government use this 97,000 crores for power plants and desalination for water from sea.

Any technical fault and if get stranded!
Is it worth spending so much money and they would not get enough passenger who wish to travel.
First insure life and take courage to travel.
Whatsoever, this is the first experience and if successful it is going to be another wonder. First run of the train may be only with who developed and completed the project.
    Good luck.

We are way behind in the infrastructure. Currently the fastest train in india travels around 150kph. Is this 1950`s??? No. We require Faster modes of transport. The investment on the the first proposed bullet train may look like waste, its actually not.

    Modi Govt lost its sense,

It is meant for Rich people only. Lower middle class and poor cant afford this. ( Later Govt can ask passengers PAN card for Booking your Tickets ..so they can assess the Income based on Trip )

From Rs.97,636 crores , Govt can construct at least 20 De-saline Cum Power production plant ( Like in Dubai, UAE ) with joint collaboration with Indian giants Tata Power, L&T, BHEL, BEL and EU heavy weight SEIMENS, ABB or American CO. General Electric or Japanese heavy weight Mitsubishi in Gujarath, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka,Kerla, TN, AP, Orissa and West Bengal.

    Shankar,

Dubai Govt doesn't implemented the Metro as its first priority. It has given first priority to Roads, Power production, Health Care, Police, Airport, Education to Citizens. Secondly There is NO shortage of water and Electricity in Dubai..

I am not against modernisation of India.
But we have to give priority based on our Society’s requirements.

Just travel from “ Virar to Church Gate Stn or Kalayan to CST ( VT ) station”. Just try to board the trains in between stations.
You will come to know what is Mumbai. Instead of spending enormous amount Govt can take little portion from this and further improve the Central and Western Railways …

Presently Entire India reeling under water shortage…..We have Good technology .We have well educated/ trained Engineers from IIT / IISc / NIT.. But what is use of it…?? In my opinion Central Govt seriously think of De-saline plant from Coastal Gujarth to WB. Its dual purpose. Along with Drinking Water we can produce power also. Presently Same technology utilised in Dubai by DEWA ( Dubai electricity and Water Authority )….. Once upon a time old Mysore Kingdom , include Bangalore got hundreds of Clean Water Lakes…..Now can you find out how many lake are remain, and can supply clean water to Bangalore…????

Previous Govt adamantly implemented Neuclear Power plant in TN. But these power plant are NOT safe for environment ( Eg.Fakushima in Japan or Chernobil in Ukrain / Belarus ) …But De- saline plant are environment friendly …. Rather than spending more than 90000 crores for Luxury, Govt should think of NECESSITY

Bullet Train o.k for long distance travelers.
But for Mumbai suburban daily commuters, who contribute enormously to the railways, please do the MOST NEEDED things.
    1. Raise the Railway Tracks by one feet of low lying areas so that they don't flood during rainy season.
    2. In City and Suburbs, replace all level crossings with Road over Brides to improve Train frequency and reduce OVER crowded Trains.
    3. Provide better approach to all stations and build walls to prevent track crossings, it will prevent accidents and claims.

In the name of the soft loan, the project will be awarded to Japanese companies, entire work and equipment supply will be done at the inflated prices by these companies compared to global competitive prices and finally the Japanese companies will have their money and the Japanese government will have its loan also. Why not then will they give the loan at 0.1% interest rate and take the train through see, as ultimately it is the indian people tax payers who will pay for this elephant
