Kundapur, Apr 20: Commuters were put to hardship due to four-hour long traffic jam on Wednesday April 20 at Basrur here. All vehicles stopped inevitably on the road waiting for the traffic to ease.

Locals said that the traffic jam was caused due to a tanker that stopped across the road near Moorukai, Basrur at around 10.30 am. The gridlock with Moorukai as the centre stretched to some kilometres. Further, the main roads in Kundapur city were completely congested.

There were several auspicious occasions such as weddings all over the taluk on Wednesday. The buses, tempo travellers, cars and two-wheelers going for such programmes were stuck for hours.

Moorukai is an area with dense traffic. As the road connects the state highway and the national highway, people are usually faced with traffic problems all day long. The road has narrowed down due to improper highway work, thus worsening the traffic congestion. Locals urged for completion of road work which they hope would ease the traffic.

It was the first time however that the traffic jam lasted for so many hours here. Traffic had come to a halt here about one-and-a-half months ago when a tree was cut for the highway work. However, it was only for an hour.

Locals have already appealed for traffic police but are yet to get any personnel assigned at the spot. People pointed out that there were traffic police at the spot on Wednesday.

As the traffic was in disarray, police officers arrived and tried hard to ease the traffic. Kundapur police circle inspector Diwaker P M, Kundapur crime division SI Devaraj and traffic police station staff finally cleared the grildlock.

If the traffic jam is caused due to a tanker that stopped across the road near Moorukai, Basrur, then we would have seen one photo of the tanker at least.

It is high time tankers are restricted to midnight or through goods train. There should be compulsory speed limiting governors fitted on these highly volatile goods carrying tankers.
