Water situation grim - mayor angry at officials for misinformation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 25: With the level of water at Thumbe dam further declining to 7.8 feet, the city faces the prospects of having to do with further cut in water supply. As the level of water in the dam dips, its potability also diminishes, which might trigger problems earlier than expected. The level of water at AMR dam too has steeply fallen, and the officials are working overtime on plans to maintain water supply as long as possible.

The city corporation has begun the task of clearing the riverbed of rocks and silt near the town in an attempt to make whatever little water available to flow into the dam. The officials, with the help of locals, may continue with this operation for a few days.

Earlier, it was said that AMR project dam holds water that would be enough for the city for a few days. On Sunday, city mayor, Harinath, visited AMR dam area and was shocked to find that the water level was at its nadir. He expressed anger at the wrong information about the water standing at the dam provided to the administration by officials. Noting that MRPL and SEZ plants have been lifting water from River Netravati in spite of the fact that the city residents are not getting water, he asked city corporation's executive engineer, Lingegowda, to take steps to stop this practice forthwith.

The mayor said that the work to clear boulders and silt which are standing in the way of water flowing to the dam are being cleared, to improve the situation. The locals brought to the notice of the mayor during his visit that about 18 mgd of water can flow into the dam if industries stop pumping river water.

Why can't we seriously think of De-Salination Plants as we have plenty of water available through Sea?During Smart City proposal also, i had mentioned about it.But Lords of the land are so busy in unwanted things that they hardly get time to devote for serious issues.Water is very essential and so let's not keep fighting over problems, instead work towards effective solution efficiently in the overall interest of all selflessly as we all need water for the very survival and existence. Public Servants, pull up your socks to use all powers before it's too late.Best of Luck.

Friends, it is true, that since we live on the coast, water from everywhere upstream flows towards Mangalore and we should never have a water scarcity in the normal course. What we are now seeing is clearly a man made problem. The fault lies in the diversion of the waters of the Netravathi, the lifeblood of Mangalore. The Yettinahole project is clearly not just damaging the ecology of the Western Ghats, but also causing the present water scarcity. However, we ourselves have not helped, because we are profligate with our water use, chop trees mercilessly and fail to do all in our power to plant trees and recharge ground water.
Let us spend as little time as possible on blaming politicians. They do what they do. No further comment needed. Let us do what we can. Mobilize yourselves, use your Wado groups to educate people on how to use water judiciously and petition government to stop the diversion of the Nethravati.

It is mysterious that Mangalore City had abundant water when CM addressed press meet to explain his vision on "Yettinahole" and the city went dry overnight on his departure. Mr. Mayor is not a fourth standard -out that official can take him for a ride on water level at Thumbe vented dam. Please stop this insensible drama. Now Rs. 1.40 Crore is available to meet the immediate needs of political hierarchy. First, let them decide the sharing pattern. Water will be supplied either my summer rain or by monsoon. Awaken Mangaloreans from the deep slumber! With River Nethravathi diverted, water will be available in tankers at your doorstep from January onward during next summer. Rs. 13000 Crore project is irresistible. Who told democracy is a costly affair?!

It is a manmade disaster situation. Everyone knows as population rise amenities usage is rises. Demand and growth go together. Everyone in this grievance letter saying do like this, do like that. Who will do the same. Talking is not the solution for this. Money and power only playing a major role playing a major role in this greedy world. Power is there corruption is there. Kerala people are very much to be appreciated by agitating role model to get something from the government. What I am seeing in Mangalore is only talking no action from the people side. In foreign county like middle east they are planning for the city development by considering the population growth, water demand, vehicle movement and public amenities for the future year 2020 and 2030 etc. Here we want like , we want like that only. So action only fructified.

    It is grim situation.
Already we have 75% of the new apartments vacant and not sold out.

Still we are building new and lot more.
Are we going to house our old and street loitering cattle in them, and may be all animals.

Of course I have noticed the corporation makes big money with taxes collected even from unoccupied ones, once the completion certificate is given.

Just go and see the situation at the Corporation Office how much money pours in multiple thousands per household every day, average collection of half a crore.

Where does this money go? Remember the recent incidence in a nearby Panchayat for replacing street lights, the bill was 20 thousand, but inflated to 65 thousand.
I think, it is Commonwealth Games Scam everywhere.

We need to work on water conservation like never before! From September to May if we block and preserve water entering Arabian sea, this water problem will be solved. We are not utilizing several minor irrigation dams to store water for summer needs. Few utilized ones in DK has enough water for three more months! Can not blame new building construction as long as they do not build on preserved forest land!

Good drama by mayor. Just blame the center. It was all due to the inefficient leadership in the past. Lots of natural resources have been scrapped to give way for concrete jungle.
Our local leaders accepted bribes and turned a blind eye. Thanks to the 'rubber stamp' mayor who sanctioned all this and got away with lots of Moolah. Now we pay the price.

When the water reserves are not able to cater to the existing buildings, how come they r issuing licenses to so many new buildings??

New building proposals should only be granted after the developer gets permission from water supply dept as to how the builder would be able to cater to the supply!!

Borewells are not permanent, drilling should be strictly regulated, or else the situation will become very very grim in the coming years due to random, unregulated drilling which will take the water table further down!!

Should learn from the experience of how some places like Latur became totally parched!!

This is just the beginning. Water rationing is something we are not used to. We have enjoyed plenty of water all along. It is only now, just as a reader pointed out, that the water crisis has cropped up. I would not hesitate to place the blame on the doorstep of the builders who have ruthlessly cut down the trees to make way for the buildings resulting in huge profits for themselves. But aren't the authorities also to blamed for this sorry state of affairs? They have issued licences left, right and centre without caring for nature. Of course, they have filled their pockets in the process. The Forest Minister is also to be blamed as he has done nothing to preserve the forests when it was his duty to increase the forest cover. As if all this is not enough, we have the Yettinahole project that is being thrust upon us by the politicians in the guise of providing water to Kolar. It is an open secret that in the name of providing water to Kolar, it has been planned to divert water to the industries in Bangalore. It is well known that these industries are owned by the politicians and some wealthy people. Hence the urgency in getting this project implemented. Is it fair that some people benefit when the majority of the residents here are not having water to drink? But then why will the politicians worry when the people themselves do not seem to have any problems. Nobody is bothered about what is going on and if someone takes up the cudgels, he gets absolutely no support from the people. Very very strange. I do not know what will be our fate with this sort of mentality. Are we so dumb that anybody can just trample us and bulldoze over us? Why don't we wake up to the reality and see the writing on the wall?

Officials hood winking the Politicians is common. How ever Shri Harinath our Honourable Mayor, well experienced, well seasoned shouldn't have taken them lightly. Now he has to face the entire Mangalore City Citizens, not merely his Ward people. The situation is grim, hence he has to send MCC officials around Building construction sites to check the source of water they are using/misusing without water meter. What happened to our second Dam? He has to send SOS to State Government to replenish funds. When the Heat is on strike hard.

Mangalore used to be a place where rains used to be abundant and begin by April itself every year until a decade ago. The genesis of the problem began about 8 years back when real estate development started taking roots in Mangalore and even today, it continues unabated. In the name of so called development which has been faulty from the beginning, the city has been raped, plundered and marred of all its natural beauty. Trees are mercilessly slaughtered, rivers are polluted or diverted, seas are polluted, garbage is dumped wherever convenient, tarred roads have been replaced by concrete roads. Everywhere you see only concrete monoliths, the good old tiled roof houses have to searched to be able to see one. Concrete by nature absorbs heat and releases it, so the environment only heats up with hot air everywhere. Vehicle numbers have increased exponentially and that has only added to the environmental pollution.
Does the Corporation have the guts to stop construction activity in Mangalore when there is shortage, so that water can be conserved for the citizens. People in power talk of Smart cities and Yettinahole diversion. When there is no water for the existing cities, how can we ever think of taking these projects up? Is the government taking the people for granted or playing a cruel joke on all of us?
