Mangaluru, Apr 26: In a boost to maritime security, Indian Coast Guard ship 'Shoor' arrived at its base port in the city on Tuesday, April 26. The ship was accorded grand welcome in the presence of commander of Coast Guard, Karnataka K R Suresh.

The ceremony was graced by chief guest P C Parida, chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust and A B Ibrahim, deputy commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district. Various dignitaries from central and state government were also present. The ship will be berthed at New Mangalore Port.

ICGS Shoor commanded by deputy inspector general Surendra Singh Dasila, is a 105-meter offshore patrol vessel, indigenously designed and built by M/s GSL, Goa. The ship was commissioned at Goa by minister of shipping, road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari on April 11.

ICGS Shoor is fitted with advanced navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery. The features include 30 mm CRN 91 naval gun, integrated bridge system, integrated machinery control system, power management system and high power external fire fighting system. The ship is designed to carry one twin engine light helicopter and five high speed boats including for fast boarding operations, search and rescue, law enforcement and maritime patrol. The ship is also capable of carrying pollution response equipment to combat oil spill contamination at sea. The ship has a maximum speed of 23 knots and 6000 NM endurance.

'Shoor' meaning 'Valiant', is capable of performing the role of a command platform and accomplish all Coast Guard charter of duties. The commissioning of this sophisticated and state-of-the-art offshore patrol vessel will give an impetus to the maritime protection of vast coastline on western seaboard especially Karnataka.
