Mangaluru: Demand to scrap Yettinahole project - District bandh on May 19

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Netravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti has decided to organize voluntary Dakshina Kannada district bandh on May 19 to put pressure on the state government to shelve Yettinahole project, which envisages diverting of water from a tributary of River Netravati.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held on Wednesday April 27 at Arya Samaj in the city under the presidentship of former MLA, Vujay Kumar Shetty. A decision to organize this bandh was taken after taking note of the fact that the government was going ahead with Yettinhaole project, totally overlooking the objections raised by the people of Dakshina Kannada district.

"The district is facing acute shortage of drinking water. Everyone is now realizing the important role played by River Netravati in their lives. Therefore, we need to come together to pressurize the government to to immediately stop execution of this project. To achieve our objective, in addition to legal means, we also have to intensify our agitation to bring pressure on the government," Shetty felt.

Shetty came down heavily on the people's representatives for their failure to throb to the aspirations of the people. Insisting that this is a question of life and death, he felt that it was wrong on the part of the people to jeopardise the future of the next generation by keeping mum and allowing the project to proceed further.

Vijay Kumar Shetty also felt that there is a need to carve out separate Tulunadu by combining Kodagu and undidivded Dakshina Kannada district, because of the unwilliingness of the government to lend an ear to the voices of the people here.

Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji of Kemar Sadhanarshram supported Shetty's views and felt that here is a strong need to organize intensified protest against the project. Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Math Gurpur announced his preparedness to take active part in this protest. President of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district Muslim Central Committee, K S Muhammed Masood, said that he has realized the tragic consequences of supporting Yettomajp;e project, adding that the Muslim community is prepared to join hands with any kind of fight against this project.

Convener of the Samiti, M G Hegde, said that shockingly, the state government, which realized that enough water was not available from Yettinahole project, is now preparing a blue print to lift water from Gundia. He expressed shock at the way government is expanding the scope of this project.

Fr William and Fr J C B Crasta, who participated as representatives of Bishop's House, supported the action plan against Yettinahole project.

Samiti office bearers, Satyajit Suratkal, Meghnath Shetty, Vijayakumar Kodialbail, Harikrishna Bantwal, Annayya Kulal, Dinakar Shetty, and others were present.

Its very sad to see that protest is not getting the support of the people of mangalore. We have 5 congress Mlas from Mangalore who do not raise the voice. Even if BJP Mlas are elected it will be the same case. Still 2 years are left for election. Its better that the people of Mangalore Boycott the elections and teach the Neta's a lesson

The Yettinahole project is the BABY of previous BJP Government and eagerly looked after and taken care by the present Congress Government. It is all the politicians of Karnataka, specially Congress, BJP, JDS and other parties and specially of DK and Udupi Districts have become immune to the voice of the people because all want to be involved in this money spindling project and amassing wealth not only for them but their future generations from this Yettinahole project.

IT IS BEST THAT NEW AND SEPARATE COASTAL KARNATAKA STATE IS THE NEED OF THE HOUR rather to be ruled by the dirty and arrogant politicians from Bangalore and other part of the State.
Even GOD from Heaven and SATAN from Hell come to Karnataka to convince these politicians will be of no use and worst is that they will drive them out from here. Shame on them.
And all the MLAs and MPs of DK and Udupi should be shown the UNCEREMONIAS EXIT DOOR.
Let us wake up before it is too late. JAI NEW SEPARATE COASTAL KARNATAKA STATE. JAI HIND. JAI HIND.

I think it is the high time to put pressure on state govt. to construct mini dams to store the flowing water to the sea during rainy season so that water can be utilsed for drinking purpose in summer season.

Diversion of Nethravati or its tributary must never be allowed at any cost when the need for water in Mangalore is on the rise with growing population, residential apartments and industrial units. Otherwise the days are not far when Mangalore and entire DK will have to face a Marathawada like situation. We are not against supplying excess water to Kolar and Chickballapur. These greedy politicians must realize that there are methods other than this expensive, hazardous, destructive project such as conserving water during monsoons by constructing artificial lakes, tanks and supplying water through pipelines instead of diverting the course of a natural river, which will be disastrous in future. It’s an open secret why politicians from all parties are too much interested and eager to implement this Rs.13000 Crore plus project.

@Ronald- some people were telling that when you stop flow of water to see then there will be some imbalance in nature so some are protesting. We should get big dam like alamatti or Krishna raj Sagar near bantwal. That should be the solution..

Guys please listen. It is not correct to scrap yettinahole project now. Let them get water from ghat section. We get enough rain here below ghat section. Our rivers will be overflowing during July-August. Do you have any honest plans to save that water and stop flow to Arabian sea. We should store water at some place. Honestly don't you feel so? No politics please.

Sri, good thought and practical too. Do I and you follow that. Do I and you take initiative. WE buy lands and level it. All the greenery gone. Trees and their leaves hold the water on soil. Do we preserve trees. The mess is created each one of us. We want our land to be leveled and we put interlocks to make it clean and tidy. We educated people throw plastic like anything. Are we concerned about anything. Its the greenery of this land has to be preserved. Which is disappearing due to real estate. Everyone wants to invest in real estate and thats the result every inch of land is compromised. We call ourselves educated but we dont have the commonsense of a layman. Our children are least bothered about environment and nature will revert soon.

Scrap the yetthina hole project immediately . Let it be as it is . Don't destroy Mangalore please . All industries, it sectors , or any activities which is causing damage to Mangalore should be stopped immediately . We need greener Mangalore and Mangalore should concentrate only on education, hospitality and health care. We want people from all over the world to visit Mangalore ( India ) . We should think more on organic farming, woofing and tourism.
Siddu , Dvs , get off your eyes from Mangalore. Any political leader think 1000 times before you think of doing any damage to Mangalore. That will prove costly to all of you guys.

We want peace , love and togetherness with nature throughout world , India and specially Kadri , nanthoor in Mangalore.

    GOD BLESS YOU ALL.AMEN

Although I do not think that organising bands is the solution to all problems, in this case, we are left with no alternative but to call a bandh. It has my complete support and I appeal to each and every one to whole heartedly lend their unstinted support. Our Netravati river is our life line and we must resist all attempts to divert the flow of the water. When we ourselves do not have water to drink, there is absolutely no question of releasing water to the industrial area of Bangalore which is where this water is intended to be diverted. It is a well known fact that these industries are owned by some politicians and a few wealthy people because of which there is a hurry to implement the Yettinahole project. All the people of this region, irrespective of caste and creed and the party they support should join hands and thwart the nefarious activities of those who are behind this project. Do not depend on the elected representatives of this region, they have stabbed us behind our backs and nothing can be expected of them. If they were really interested in the welfare of those who elected them, all of them would have joined together and put pressure on the government to scrap this project. In stead of doing this, they are giving the lame excuse that since they are part of the government, they cannot do anything. This is the time they have to show their worth and if they do not do this now, why do we need them? Let them go to hell. The people of this region are capable of fighting their own battles. We have to fight now. It is now or never. Let us take an oath to safeguard our river. Remember, if we do not do that, we will not have water to drink next year.

At least there is water in the southern basin and the rivers still flow and empty the water in the sea. Let them tap that free flow and use for better purpose.
Lots of people and cattle from drought hit areas in the north are critically facing the need for water. So disastrous and very heartrending situation.
Let us hope monsoon will start bit early to give respite.(water & heat)
