Mangaluru: MLC Ivan announces Rs 1.25 crore to install solar units in 50 schools

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Apr 28: MLC Ivan D' Souza has announced that he will provide Rs 1.25 crore from his MLC fund to 50 aided and government primary and high schools in Dakshina Kannada district to install 3 KW solar rooftop units.

Addressing a press meet here, Ivan said, "The cost of each solar unit is Rs 2.5 lac. A 3 KW solar rooftop unit produces 12 units of electricity per day, or 360 units of electricity per month. As per the present Mescom electricity tariff, each solar grid will produce electricity worth Rs 3,441.60 per month. The schools can use this solar power and sell the surplus electricity to the Mescom grid. During vacations, the surplus electricity can be sold to Mescom. The amount, obtained from the surplus electricity sold to Mescom, should be utilized to purchase sports equipment for the children.

"I will write to MLAs of all constituencies in the district to send names of 5 schools from each constituency. MLAs can refer the names directly to me or through the deputy commissioner’s office," Ivan informed.

He also revealed that he has already used Rs 26 lac from his MLC fund to install solar rooftop units at the DC's office, six gram panchayats and in 40 houses in Endosulfan-affected villages.

Corporator Appi and former corporator Nagendra were present.

New project means money. Money means politicians. I guess it should be .25 crore project.

This is a good move. When there is no water in dam to produce electricity, this can be the good alternative. If solar panels become affordable to all, then we will not have power cut.

Hope "SOLAR" does not end up with "SOLAR SCANDAL" OR "SOLAR CANDLE".

In Mangaluru Municipality dumping yard in Vamanjoor, some solar street lights were installed within the yard itself. While dumping process continued and they also dumped these solar lights / Solar panels under the waste. There is accountability anywhere in the organization. Everybody is on the race, who does not know what is right or wrong they want to prove something extraordinary, but fail to take the concerned personnel into confidence before implementing it.

eg. Now SOLAR panels installed at the cost of Government (Public tax money), and batteries are put in place. However, without providing proper guidance, training, instruction to the end user (now-a-days these jobs are outsourced and every week there is new replacement) to operate it and maintain it. Thus end result no power production.

Good, sensible initiative undertaken by Ivan, which will not only tap solar energy, but help in reducing the carbon footprint.

Hope his example will be followed in by others, in conserving nature and natural resources in the twin districts, in other ways like water conservation, tree planting, pollution control, etc., which would prove the twin districts to be really 'smart and shining'.

Good work Ivanji. I am proud of you.
I would also be more happier if you could push the government to give solar units to other educational institutions at subsidized rates.

Good work Ivan keep it up . some thing nice . We require some thing that will supply water in summer till rains, like a mini desalinization plant run on solar energy.

Dubai produces electricity as by product from desalinization plant.

When saline water is heated in minus pressure, water boils at 65 degrees centigrade, the steam produced is fed to generators which produce electricity. We have potable water and electricity.

Now don't ask me how the water is heated.

Why not Ivan for same cause first.
Belman is still to develop. Only find a small hotel having only served one or two items near bus stop. Whole area turn to darkness after seven. People feared to come out of there home due to it turn to forest after seven.

    Langoo Maam,
Goshala , you mean home for the destitute and abandoned cows. Che Che. Cows to be kept in the houses and worshiped. They should be provided with a bed room in the house with drinking water facilities. Ivan sir will definitely encourage Dairy farm where cows are provided with grazing ground , swimming pool , best medical facilities and burial with rituals in the end .
