Mangaluru, Apr 29: City police commissioner Chandra Sekhar on Friday April 29 informed that the city crime branch (CCB) police have succeeded in arresting four accused relating to two murder attempt cases which occurred three days ago within the limits of Ullal police station.

Addressing a press meet at his office here, Chandra Sekhar said that the arrested are Rahul R alias black Rahul (20), a resident of Krishnanagar, Thokkottu, who works as plumber, Pavan Raj (20), a resident of Kapikad, Thokkottu, who works as a painter, Edwin Rahul D'Souza alias Puchche Rahul (18), a resident of Kotekar and PU student, and diploma student Kartik (19), also of Kotekar.

In the first instance, a case about attacking a person named Safwan near Thokkottu Olapete at around 12.50 am on April 27 had been registered in Ullal police station. In the other instance, complaint of attack on Safwan Hassan from Kallapu Patna at 3.20 pm on April 26 was filed in Ullal police station.

The personnel of the city crime branch, who collected information about the accused who were involved with these crimes, got to know that the accused in these cases were present near B C Road bus stand. On the basis of this reliable information, they rushed there and took the four persons into custody.

The commissioner also said that all the four were involved in both the incidents.

The police commissioner said that Pavan Raj, who was linked to the murder attempt on Lancy D'Souza near Thokkottu Chembugudde in 2015, was released on bail by the court three months back. Kartik, whose name figured in the robbery attempt in 2015 within the limits of the city (south) police station, was released on bail about two months back.

He reiterated that the attacks were carried out on innocents in a random manner, and that the accused did not know the victims. Investigations are on to ascertain the exact reason for the attacks, he said.

He also informed that the police have held discussions with leaders of various communities and asked them to counsel youngsters to desist from committing crimes. He added that community leaders have assured their full support in this regard.

Asked about the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the police commissioner said that it has been imposed from 6 am on April 29 to 6 pm on April 30, as there were apprehensions that an organization was getting ready to hold a rally in the city without permission.

CCB unit police inspector, Valentine D'Souza, police sub-inspector, Shyam Sundar and other personnel were part of the investigation work pertaining to the above cases.
