Dubai, Oct 18: Noel Mascarenhas has been a revolutionary leader right from his school days at St Aloysius and then dynamic leader through students' union at Government College Mangalore. People from Mangalore cannot easily forget the incidents that took place in Mangalore during students' unrest in the year 1971. Noel Mascarenhas was the student union leader during that time, and was most popular leader among the students around the district. He fought for the students’ rights during those days.

Noel Mascarenhas

Not many remembered that this is the same Noel who took the challenging leadership in St Mary's Konkani Community in the St Mary's Church Dubai when Bishop of Mangalore was on the visit to UAE in 2001. Under his leadership, he organized the event in Dubai and eventually converted the united team of volunteers into a full-fledged organization within the Catholic community.

This was just the beginning of a glorious time that was to follow.  The association organized one after other successful events that brought Catholics together in Dubai. He put forward the cause of helping poor within the community while a number of families benefited from his dynamic leadership Mangalore and around.

Fr Freddy

Not to forget that the then spiritual director, Fr Cyprian D’Souza was instrumental in motivating the St Mary's Konkan Community (SMKC) with the help of core committee and general body members. Fr Freddie continued his support when he came to Dubai in October 2005. Now SMKC on the threshold of sixth glorious anniversary.

Today SMKC Dubai, being a premier association in the Middle-East region, has been able to reach out to countless needy persons since its inception in 2001.

Core Committee - SMKC

This year the SMKC Core Group has decided to adopt 5 children from poorest of poor families from 11 interior parishes of the St Thomas Southern Varado. that is Bela, Kayyar, Kumbla, Kasaragod, Kollangana, Narampady, Manjeshwar, Miyapadavu, Pavur, Ukkinadka and Vorkady belonging to the dioceses of Mangalore.   The aim of SMKC is to educate more and more children so that poor families can be uplifted to a better financial situation whereby a stronger and better society is built with love and concern.

SMKC is indebted to the support of all the sponsors and well-wishers who help to realize the dreams of the organization to reach out to the poor throughout the year.   Considering the credibility and the good works of the organization over the past 6 years, there has not been an opportunity when the well-wishers have turned down the request of sponsoring the annual event in a big or small way. Many of the sponsors have contributed generously since the beginning and they are being approached only once every year.   Working under the holistic umbrella of St Mary's Church and the spiritual guidance of Fr Freddy D’Souza, the organization is marching ahead with great pace to reach out to many more throughout the region.  Mother Mary has always been the model and patron of this association who has blessed each member of SMKC.

SMKC committee members are happy to dedicate their time and energy for this noble cause with zeal to continue the good work for many years to come.
