Mangaluru: Water enough only for a week, says mayor; opposition decries officials' apathy

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 30: City mayor, Harinath, noted that the water stored in the Thumbe reservoir would be sufficient for the city only for a week. He asked officials to conduct study, identify water sources, and put up complete information about details of private and government wells as well as borewells in the city which can be processed and utilized, within a week. He warned of holding the officials responsible if they fail to attend to this work properly.

He was addressing the general session of the city corporation council convened here on Friday April 29.

City corporation commissioner, Dr H N Gopalakrishna, said that as a measure of managing crisis in case the vented dam at Thumbe goes dry, tankers have been kept in readines. "We have identified some water sources in the city and sent water samples to the university for testing their potability. Unauthorized pumps that were functioning to a distance of 11 km from AMR dam have been cleared. There is 2 MCM water in Disha Power Project at Kempu Hole, Gundia, and a proposal has been sent to the deputy commissioner of the district to release this water in case situation goes out of control," he explained.

Leader of the opposition in the city corporation, Premanand Shety, speaking on the occasion, put the blame directly on the apathy of officials in managing water problem. "Even after being aware that there is water shortage, the officials did not take steps to conserve water. They could have arranged to see that AMR dam holds enough water. How did the water level at AMR fall steeply all of a sudden?" he wanted to know.

Sudhir Shetty Kannur wanted to know where from water would be provided if the wells go dry. Roopa D Bangera said that water problem would not have arisen if the vented dam construction was completed in time. Several corporators said that the water that is being supplied through taps once in two days is not even reaching 40 percent of houses.

Corporator, Mahabala Marla, sought to know from officials how water in AMR dam, which the officials had claimed stoold at 13.9 feet, suddenly went down the next day. Premananda Shetty strongly felt that the officials were expected to ensure that the water at AMR dam is maintained at the usual level as in earlier years. He blamed officials for casually making statements about sufficient water being available in that dam without checking the fact.

City corporation commissioner said that the deputy commissioner had been apprised of water problem in first week of April. This matter also was brought up at the meeting attended by district in-charge secretary, Bharatlal Meena. Later, at a meeting presided over by minister Ramanath Rai, it was decided to regulate water supply once in two days. Therefore, the officials have been handling the issue to the best of their abilities, he stated.

Engineer in water supply division, Linge Gowda, said that 1 MCM water is available in MRPL dam but it has 15 feet of sand. He said this water can be brought by conducting dredging. He added that about 72 bunds built at various spots along River Netravati were cleared, as a result of which five to six inches of water flowed into Thumbe dam.

Deputy mayor, Sumitra Kariya, standing committee chairpersons, Lancylot Pinto, Basheer Ahmed, Appi, and others were present.

This is the high time think about water crisis. Every one comments about the problems in our city. Who will take the action in this matter. Start from individual to think about it. In our city most of them have 3 to 5 cents of land. They cannot collect rain water in their land. Collecting the rain water in the rain season is the only solution this water scarcity by digging ponds to collect the rain and directly filter to the ground. We have to increase the ground water level. More trees are to be planted at the rainy season. What the forest and irrigation department is doing in this regard. Where ever the vacant land is there plants to be put. Media has to give advertise the problems of water scarcity now and then. One of the panchaboota material is not there every living being will not survive in this world. So, think sensibly and put effort in this matter. This is every one responsibility.

How easily these good for nothing, greedy people talk of encroaching on private property after neglecting their duties? They should have been planning and providing for water and other fundamental needs along with the explosive growth of the city.
Look at how poisonous and stinking, our existing water sources have become.

Criticism is not the only solution. The water management authority must think to erect a water treatment plant to convert sea water into potable water. They can take guidance from Gulf countries particularly UAE. There was a plant near Tannirbavi some years back to produce electricity by boiling water of the sea. The plant that produced steam by heating sea water using nafta and the steam that don't have salt were released to the sea again. Scientists should think to use this water due to this water cycle and use it for potable purpose. Similarly the sweet water can be stored in Udupi power plant. Today I have seen in the news that in Kasargod they are planning to install a sea water cleaning plant. If they are thinking, why we cannot think of it.

Water is the basic necessity ,then again cut trees and build more buildings Mother Nature will show her wrath too. We the public will forget so easily all this in the coming months and question the authorities only next year.

    NM, Mangalore,
Birth control/family planning and population control is a must. But just remember how such measures which were supported by late Rajiv Gandhi back fired through the massive politicization of the family planning program that led, eventually, to the Congress defeat in the 1977.
In our country politicians are worried more about their seats/powe than joining hand to fight against common cause. i.e. India’s exploding population growth. Either there are religious implications or politicians/opposition meddling with ruling government by picking such issues as an arm to bring the down fall of the government.
China succeeded to implement and control family planning through military power or government. When India will realize is beyond our imagination!

When we can get success in MISSION TO MARS ( expenditure, manpower, time , organization, brains)- Water crisis in DK does not need Rocket science to solve this crisis !!!

Lack of proper understanding and therefore caring our mother earth has caused this crisis. Mark my words" This is only the beginning" WORSE is yet to come. So let us be busy with our own lives, watch our TV serials, bitch about our politicians, and sleep happily.

Our children( the future generations) are also clueless as their text books do not fully incorporate the element of personal responsibility that each should develop in conserving water. Some of our corporators are busy critisizing Antony waste management and ignoring the plea of people in their area.

Our Centers of higher education( Mangalore University) does not seem to take part in any public educational programes. There are many medical colleges they also are not doing any efforts in public awareness of water conservation efforts.

    1. We needs small ponds that serve as catchment areas for rain water in every 20 Km radius. No compromise. When we need to build roads or widen them we find ways to acquire land. Change laws for this too.

    2. Requirement for minimum amount of trees in each area. Serve to hold ground water as well as replenish it via preventing run over of rain water.
3.Areas that are relatively in higher elevation to sea level outside mangalore can have bigger government reservoirs( every village) that also can serve for inland fisheries. Beneficial at a time when there is less marine catch.

    4. Sign a MOU with Israel in arid farming methods to change our ways of doing agriculture. This will reduce the amount of water needed.

    5. Devise ways to minimise evaporation of water from reservoirs.

    7. Annually remove silt from river beds in summer. Budget it.

    Dear All,
The root cause of this problem is our exploding population. We are a nation of 125 crore people and the limited natural resources which we possess will not be able to meet our requirements from now on.

If we would have controlled our population in the past, then we would not have come across this day, where people are fighting over 1 liter water.

Its high time we enforce the 1 or 2 child policy.

Now is the time for the government and citizens alike to think about the traditional way of storing the water and increasing the ground water level. Instead of eying the vacant lands for building high rise building to exploit for commercial purposes, we need to use the vacant lands for gardens, open spaces, lakes, ponds, wells etc which can help the ground water level to rise. These are all nature-friendly ways of living. On the other hand, if we keep exploiting the nature for commercial purposes, the future will be bleak for humanity.

Our Corrupt Politicians very often visit Gulf Countries for Enjoyment.
They have not bothered to know that there r no Rivers, Ponds & Wells to supply water to their citizens there. Like Gulf countries, now only option left for us in Mangalore is to install De Salinization plants in Mangalore & Malpe Sea, for a permanent solution for the Water shortage every one is facing in Mangalore. If we can afford to spend about RS.90,000/- crore for Bullet trains, why not we can spend money for our urgent need of Water? DW please pass this message to Mangalore Corporation, as it is a serious issue for all of us.

I strongly endorse the opinions expressed by different readers of this news column.
There are two perspectives & angel I feel must be viewed with which this great crisis of water for meeting one of the most basic needs for the people of Mangalore city and the service/commercial establishments by the honourable readers of this news column.
1st and foremost many of the Hindi news channels have been broadcasting the severe water crisis in the Municipal Corporation city of LATUR, in the state of Maharashtra with many photos & live videos of the drought hit LATUR city where the residents were queuing up in the night at 2pm or late for getting few buckets of water for their home. They claim 5years back they never thought they will face this water dryness problem.Hence the local government bodies of our city & neighbouring areas must immediately press into action to ensure that all the citizens specially those affordable must focus on implanting Rain water harvesting & all other means so that at least coming January upto start of the monsoon likely in June we don’t have any water scarcity in our city every year after year,

Secondly the City corporation must ensure that they get the water samples tested not from the University, but from those Water Testing Laboratories accredited by NABL, some of them are situated in Mangalore itself so that the actual and reality about the water sources can be confirmed for consumption by the people of Mangalore without any harm to the health both chemically or biologically.
The University laboratories too can be used if they are also accredited by reputed recognition agencies.
