Mangaluru, May 1: The 42nd community celebration of weddings, popularly known as Rosario mass wedding, took place at Rosario Cathedral here on Sunday May 1.

As many as 26 couples from different places of Mangaluru diocese as well as outside participated in the mass wedding ceremony this year. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangaluru solemnized the weddings.

'Rosario mass wedding' is a joint venture of St Vincent De Paul Society (SVP), a worldwide service organization of Catholic laypeople and the Rosario Cathedral, the oldest parish in the land.

The ceremony began with a Eucharistic Mass, with bishop of Mangaluru Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza as the main celebrant. The bishop in his homily said, "Marriages are planned by God. The community weddings event in Rosario has a long history of helping couples celebrate the sacrament in a simple yet meaningful way. Once you take the vows here, you are bound to follow the vows until your death no matter what. You have pledged to take care of your spouse in happiness and sorrow."

Dr Aloysius D’Souza, after the nuptials called upon the couples to love each other unconditionally and to remain faithful to each other all their lives.

Host of clergymen with Monsignor Denis Moras Prabhu, Fr Rocky Fernandes, Fr Vincent D’Souza, Fr Paul Melwyn D’Souza capuchin and Fr Paul Sebastian D’Souza participated in the Eucharist.

In the reception and cultural ceremony which followed later, Dr Edward Nazareth was the chief guest. Dr Nazareth in his address said, "I am happy to note that hundreds of couples have entered into the wedlock at this place over the past four decades. We should encourage simple marriages. When we talk about marriage, we should keep three rings in mind - bearing, sharing and caring. If we follow this rule, our marriages will be successful."

Fr J B Crasta welcomed the gathering including the couples, their families and well wishers. C J Simon and Mary J Pinto, president and secretary of SVP respectively, welcomed the people for lunch and proposed the vote of thanks.

Elizabeth Roche and Dolphy D’Souza the vice president of parish pastoral council participated in the traditional 'Opsun dhivnchem' ceremony where the bride is handed over to the groom's family.

All the donors were presented with roses as token of appreciation for their help. Jude Coelho, vice-president of SVP central council, members of the SVP from Rosario Cathedral as well as from other parishes were present among others.

Francis D’Souza (Penchu Ruzay) compered the cultural ceremony.

Those who can afford celeberate their wedding by spending lavishly. Those who cannot it is better to join in the mass marriage spending economically without falling a prey to debts by entering into a simple way of wedding. Really appreciable. Congrats to all the wedded couples.

These 26 couples deserves to be congratulated not only for receiving the Sacrament of Marriage, but also for their bold step of joining in the common wedding ceremony. We are living in such a time and culture where everyone wants to upstage the others by their opulent and lavish kind of celebrations and showing of their money power and influence of higher ups in the society. Here are 26 couples who dare to flow against the current, and show to the world, that, the grand celebrations can only give a short term pleasure of feeling great! But most important is forming a happy, God centred and model families as Pope Francis envisaged in his latest post Synodal document on Family 'Joy of Love'.

Twenty six newly wedded couples gathering together at the Rosario Catholic Church and joining their hands for the Sacrament of Matrimony in the presence of their families and friends is certainly a joyous occasion to watch. Perhaps this is one of the noblest occasion that St. Vincent De Paul Society has undertaken anywhere in the World. They have to be complemented highly along with the Rosario Church for organizing the occasion in a colorful and festive manner.

The responsibility of conducting twenty six marriages under one roof at one time in the presence of the Bishop and rest of the clergy requires lot of planning, effort and also cost. These 26 newly married couples will remain ever grateful to all those that joined their hands to make this auspicious occasion take place in such a grand manner.

As time goes by, and as the newly wedded couple will be blessed with their extended families, they will share their "success stories" to their children, and the life will move along with happy feelings that will make them remain grateful to their Church, their Church leaders and all those that helped them to make their marriage ever successful.

Let the concern for one another prevail, and let the Christianity prove the worth of their charity and generosity for many more generations to enjoy.

    Mr. Kumar,

They are inside a place of worship. Once the solemnization of marriage is over, they will move to a recreation area where all celebration will take place and you can see them expressing their joy.

Wonderful arrangement. A wish for a happy married life, a long long life ahead of love and unity to all of you.

I am sure many kind hearted individuals may have contributed to this event. An event that made it possible for these couples to unite in matrimony, which was otherwise not possible due to their poverty.

We can see many of them in their later years of youth yet its nice to see them having found a companion in life. All, including the poor as do the rich, have a right to happiness and married life. Deprivation of it causes imbalance in our society.

God bless the organisers and all who generously contributed.
