Mangaluru, May 1: With scorching heat continuing to hit the coastal region and not even a hint of rain in sight, the Muslim community gathered in a big numbers at Nehru Maidan here on Sunday May 1 and offered special prayers for rain.

The water crisis in the city has reached a peak with dams drying up fast. The administration is now considering supplying water once in three days.

Seeking divine intervention, hundreds of people from the Muslim community offered special Namaz at Nehru Maidan. The prayer service was organized by South Karnataka Salafi Movement. The special prayer, called Namaz-e-Istisqa, is where the faithful seek forgiveness from God and pray for rains.

Khateeb of Nandavar Salafi Juma Masjid Ahmed Ali Qasimi led the prayers.

In his sermon, the Khateeb stressed on the importance of using water judiciously and not wasting it. "Water is a gift from God but people take it for granted and tend to misuse it. We understand the value of water only when there is scarcity. This special Namaz is offered when there is acute shortage of water and we are desperately in need of rains," he said.

Considerable number of women and children also joined in the prayers.

prayer wont bring the rain. god will do his job but we have to think that whether we have done our duty. now a days people cut the trees & build the concrete buildings. there is no respect to nature. in hindu religion there is a special respect to trees & they will worship it as a god. but we people laugh at them & call it as a "mooda nambike". for this kind attitude the nature giving a reply. instead of prayer, we have to educate the people about the importance of tree/forest & water & how it can be preserved for the future.

Mr Dev Kumar you told we waste water for praising god yeah ? Indirectly ! But Excuse me there is something called respect we need to maintain while praying ! Its not like we can do anything before praying ! We need to clean ourself ! There are some people who dont even clean after washroom and then go and pray to god ! That is just for name sake.

    shakir..indeed good point of yours.
in good olden days when scarcity of water people use sands to cleanse themselves. why not we start from now onwards at even one session. it also help to save water..in near future. also we can encourage sand mafia to keep store sand free only for using for these purposes only...either water or sand is of god. will not oblige.

No Amount of prayers by muslims, Christians and hindus will bring any rain.

    Do this :
    1. Reforest with native plant species whose roots acts like check dam and kick out Acacia and neelgiri
    2. Ban JCB movements in ghats
    3. Crush the sand mafia
    4. Stop building lavish houses which you rarely use.
    4. Force your panchayats to save water bodies

All these mass prayers and homas are publicity stunts.

Instead of prayer, better teach the community how to save water & plant a tree. God is always doing his job, but we humans what gives in returns.

Look how the prayers are conducted.... No flowers, No milk, No coconuts, No bananas, no littering..... If you are so concerned about the water, do not use in the wash rooms also....Use toilet paper, that will solve the major water problem....

Khateeb said in is Sermon that "People understand the value of Water only when there is Scarcity of it". He has said it Correctly. Now Corporators are running to God Manjunath for Rain. Before this they were Chasing Black Money.
Near Kadri Pumpwell in front of Natural Ice Cream,a Air Bleeder Valve was bleeding Water at the rate of 2 Lt. per Minute which I measured in front of others. Total amount of water lost per day is about 60,000 Lts.
Kadri Ward Corporators passed by daily many times without doing anything about it.Told Him dozens of time but He did not care because repairing it will not give under the table Commission. Told to Water Department at MCC by Me at least 50 time through Phone calls and meeting Head of Water Dept. plus Chief utive Engineer Rajshekar. After my threat that I will be writing to Delhi, finally they repaired it after 3 years. All it needed was a Gasket which has to come from Bangalore. It took THREE Years to get it because that Gasket came Walking all the way from Bangalore to MCC.

Muslim & all communities of Mangalore during this difficult time along with prayer do some voluntary service like opening your homes to homeless fellow citizens, Working free in hospitals, clinics, shelters of poor & disabled. Sharing water from your home, distributing free water to stranded & traveling persons, cleaning & digging old water wells, lakes, etc,. God will really like & Bless who do something good to others then just prayers.

    Albert...
What should we do when difficulties over..should release all homeless people back to road. If all go and start to work in hospitals how one can able to manage there family.
Instead why not all clean polluted lakes, ponds, rivers and try to preserve the water.
What's the use of prayers..when we ourselves are not doing anything.
All prayers will reach to same department handled by rain god none other than varun god in hinduism or st.michael in christanity or mikhaeel in islam.

Very good points by Dev kumar.
This water crises - is an opportunity for us to realize that we need to join hands, join our efforts, pool our intelligence, Common and not so common sense into a collective wisdom to find solution.

Web portals, associations, organizations hold lots of competitions for dance fashion etc. Similarly our over smart MCC held competition for making MANGALORE " SMART CITY"

We need to hold competitions, discussion for solving the WATER CRISIS.

I believe that GOD helps those who help themselves. This is the time to forget our divisiveness, our pride, our prejudices and think long term solution to increase the water table levels in the whole of DK.

Our Smart MCC, in-charge ministers etc can take a delegation to that country in middle east which has gained success in Arid water conservation and thus converted a desert into a lush green area.

Konaje and nearby places should have maximum number of rain water collection pools to ensure that water table is replenished to serve 2 years without rain.

It is best thing to educate the masses, how to conserve and regenerate the water resources, avoid wastage of water and save water.
This kind of practice of prayer for rain is having in all religions when rain is around. Its only demonstrates that we are still not accepting scientific facts.
Its a wake up call to all and the government.

Let us start from now on wards..it's right time and.having lot of resources. Planning and moreover awareness needed at this hour. Cannot depend wholly on god. Our efforts also be needed. See how one person only in bihar manjhee constructed road by himself. Nothing is impossible.
