Alarming water situation - city to get tap water only twice a week

Mangaluru, May 2: From Saturday, drinking water is being supplied through taps within the city corporation once in three days, taking into account slumping water level at Thumbe vented dam. When taking a decision on April 20 to supply tap water once in two days, the city corporation had relied on the water standing in AMR dam. However, even after using all the water in the AMR dam, the situation has not improved.

The current level of water at Thumbe is sufficient to supply water for five to six days. Although measures like asking farmers to put off agricultural pump sets using river water, and breaking of bunds they had built to store water were taken, they did not have significant affect on water level at Thumbe, it is gathered.

City mayor, Harinath, said that the city corporation has decided to make use of alternative water sources like wells and borewells if it does not rain within a week. A number of private water source owners, during discussions, have agreed to provide water. In case someone does not agree to offer water from his source for this purpose, magisterial power of the deputy commissioner would be used to take over such borewells or wells to see that people get water, he added.

    I have very recently toured the Philippines / Malaysia / Singapore & Thailand. Singapore was the hottest . Well the general complaint of the people was the lack of rainfall. It was very hot in these countries as well. So the weather condition ( drought like ) is just not in India.

    Some of the comments are indeed very thoughtful. This shows that there is no dearth of thinkers and brains in DK.However our system is such that we either look up to God or allow our ill equipped( except good tongue) politicians be our guiding force.

    1. Why cant we have a meet and call eminent geologists and scientists to discuss long term solutions.

    2. Why cant we then put to vote( public referendum) on these resolutions advised by Geologist and water scientists?

    3. Lack of public referendum means weak power with people and strong power with self centered politicians.

    4. The points above( 1-3) also create better awareness with people.

    5. Instead of competition prize to the best suggestions, MCC should hold competition for best ideas to conserve water.

    6. Paddy fields places of bygone years inside the city also served to soak up rain water and therefore bring up the water table- they are filled up and buildings have come up.

    7. Trees serve to trap more rain water. MCC rules should be changed so as to make at least one tree mandatory for a 14 cents house compound.

    8. Places where there is high bore well density- is the place where there is very low water table. Mark these areas as Red zones - for creating ponds to drastically increase the water table.

    People who are against large dams or river dams argue that - over dependence on them makes us forget our own back yards as valuable microcosm contributors for the raise in ground water levels. If thousands(or more) of these measures take place( people participation) they are more powerful than dams in raising ground water.

    Please believe in simple logic here- Small things are also important in tiding over water crises. Please do not believe only on BIG DAMS. Of course there is no money to be made in small things. If Israel can can conserve water ( no wasting) then surely the last years scanty rain if properly harnessed can be used for 3 or more years for our water needs!

    The problem is we have had plenty.

    Welcome to the city of Mangaluru, which not too long ago was potrayed as a future smart city with hectic lobbying to get the tag. Here, you will see more of concrete jungles than green jungles, more of vehicles than humans. Our state forest minister betrays his ignorance by saying that drought and Yettinahole have no connection. Not directly, but look deeper and you find the indirect connection. There is no limit to man's greed. Rather than providing basic amenities for life, our politicians are already building castles in the air. We do not have a single politician who is grounded and has a long term vision for improving the quality of life. Even if there is, they don't open their mouths lest they displease their party leaders. They would rather be party leaders than people's leaders. What a shame! Has any initiative been taken on compulsory rain water harvesting after seeing the quantum of rain coming down over the years? Relentless construction of apartments goes on and on even if there are no buyers, roads get concretised with no facility made for collecting the rain water which will not seep in but just go waste. An IISc study paints a grim picture of Bengaluru being unliveable in 5 years how far behind is Mangalore, a widely advertised education hub with scorching heat, water woes, electricity woes, pollution woes etc? And what on earth are the parameters for giving awards for clean cities, it beats me! Any lay man can make out how clean is his city just by looking around. Will the government of the day wake up from its slumber and act in the interest of the people?

    Rudolf, 3 sea seasons of growth on paddy fields would have certainly conserved water and pushed the table up! Question is...who is going to do that work now? from where they are going to get the working hands?? Water conservation by individual form / plot owners and proper usage of irrigation dams to store water every few kilometers in the river can only save water.

    You are right. Land is costlier and borewells can be digged in small space within a day. But the borewells suck all the water from all the wells nearby and we dont have proper guidelines to regulate this. Everyone thinks his own. The situation has arrived that the borewells today are not yeilding water. Situation is worst than we think. The rate in which the water level going down and down and the more it goes deeper more txic the water would be. The presence need would be to preserve the lakes and clean it regularly. Now those called intelligent city people would know the importance of water. This situation is a teaching for those who command sitting in ac.

    Wagon, haphazard drilling of borewells by TDH to plant areca, demolishing paddy fields and using water day/night as if it was a permanent commodity to increase their produce and mint money as early as possible has led to ground water levels going down considerably, today water is available only beyond 600 feet v/s earlier 300 feet!!

    Each and every areca farmer is pumping out water like nobody's biz to increase their produce!!!

    IF THIS BOREWELL BIZ IS NOT CONTROLLED SOON, DK WILL FACE LATUR LIKE SITUATION SOON!!

    MOREOVER, FARMERS ON RIVER BANKS ARE PUMPING OUT WATER RECKLESSLY WITHOUT ANY RESTRICTIONS ADDING TO THE CRISIS!!!

    Identical situation happened in Later/surrounding areas, and today they are deserts!!

    @Rudolp- please do not target poor farmers. The reason for water crisis would be government's mismanagement of water resources. If you see state government has no role in implementing any big irrigation project from 1947. Coastal districts ignored. Other than building road railway airport and shipping no other development. People going abroad for earning bread. Here water flows to sea during monsoon and crying foul during summer. What a tragedy!

    Water scarcity yet judging by the comments- we are still divisive.

    This is the time to become united and forget our differences.


    Is there any one who finds fault with my theory " restrictions on removal of sand" from river beds has also contributed significantly to reduced water holding capacity of our rivers.

    It is know that artificial sand scarcity has resulted in causing rates of more than 1 lakh per truck load of sand to places like Bangalore. A percentage of this goes to highest level within the power structure of DK( guess who).

    While it is beneficial for the politicians to have sand scarcity to increase their income- this is detrimental to the people of DK. In open economy, in globalized world, our politicians( all are same) behaving as THUNDU RAYAS via permit RAJ!!!

    REMOVE ALL RESTRICTIONS ON SAND!! let them clean up the silt and increase the water holding capacity of our rivers!!!

    Indeed we the people are not so intelligent. Otherwise why would the minister tell us ( Yes its true) that Yettina Hole has no connection to the water scarcity. Perhaps the minister was alluding to the SAND?

    Everybody is blaming politicians...But we forget that it is human who made this situation including politicians....Each one of us has role in depleting water resources
    1)First we need to halt digging "bore well" ...2)Secondly industries are given river water rather than that they should go for sea water ...they are here to make profit so they can afford sea water
    3)Thirdly water harvesting should be made mandatory at every house...
    Mangalore being rain abundant area it is not quite difficult to recharge aquifer
    4)Natural lakes which was once present along the stretch of N.H and in and around mangalore now no longer to be seen due to concrete boom...We need to protect such natural lakes..
    5)Protect trees ..It brings rain and relief from excess heat....Green your city and villages..
    6) Community elder should iniate save environment campaign and create awareness
    Tulunadu means land of water ..Irony is that now we don't have water

    enough to the needy because increase of storage capacity is in limbo due to bureaucracy/political
    interference. 2.Who allows the industries to be set up without
    ensuring in house water management?The bureaucracy/politicians of course. 3.Who should enforce

    permits? Politicians by bringing
    in the legislation and bureaucracy by implementing the
    law in letter and spirit. 4. Who is issuing building permits recklessly and turning the city into concrete jungle? Who else but the politicians in collusion with the bureaucracy.5.Who is allowing the indiscriminate

    you are asking farmers to stop pumping and they stopped. But you did not find any improvement in water quantity. This means the real culprits are industries taking water!!!!! Why don't you ask them to stop for a day and this will at least provide a week's water for kudla. Now no water and please don't bring a situation without food!!!!! Be aware this is just a beginning.....just think what is the situation after yettinahole project!!!!!!

    when congress was there in centre proper planning for water preservation was not done. No use blaming BJP for water shortage. What was Siddhu doing so far for preserving water. Mangalore draught is because of cutting the hills and making it concrete jungle. Hills used preserve water and allowing it to drain slowly to the ground.Also using interlocking tiles to every were is letting the water go off and waste. Instead grass lawns must be grown to let the water seep to the ground during the rainy season.

    Only solution to this problem is no more borewells, rain water harvesting, ground water management, removing debris from ponds, lakes, old unused wells to store rain water, avoiding concrete on open ground. A well for each building not borewells. Plant trees a plenty everywhere which is important.
    Implement Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's pet project of interlinking of rivers throughout the Country.

    This situation is a result of the mismanagement of the state government. Regarding the water supply, the pandeshwar area is not getting any water since last 2 to 3 weeks. Yet construction work is going on uninterrupted in a lane opposite the Rosario school. Where are the authorities sleeping? Why cant teh construction works be stopped till the water situation improves? The worst governance ever.

    In Gulf countries, traffic fines alone is sufficient to feed their entire local population - do you know ? Whereas in India, even common man is a thief because jut 1% of the population files I/Tax returns !

    Have you seen the state of Gulf countries upon just one rain ? The rain at many times may not be natural but artificial, invited over cloud seeding. They are little fiefdoms in abundance of revenue, to do heroics like this unlike India the requires depending on foreign aid or guilty of outstanding oil bill payments ! Our technology is just for showcase - I don't hear any time cloud seeding done in India despite of continued drought and extending barren land year after year !

    Be logical in comparing - don't comment for the sake of it !

    @Vishal d souza,mangalore,dont compare Mangalore to Gulf.what is the Population of gulf and karnataka?ours is coastal Region .In gulf they desaline see water ,you see the result later.It is not Mineral water.Everywhere now in the world ,climate has changed,so rain in Mangalore too.All These years we made use of natural sources ,even bad use.Never thought this condition will come.Do the constructors in Mangalore stopped the construction now?Iam sure no.Bore wells pump with force all natural sources,so no Chance for normal water to detain.All pumped water doest go to drink.The dept.who had to look into the matter of water Limitation had slept too Long.Now normal People have to suffer.Instead of making others to blame let us wait and only use water for drinking and for Food,or bath.dont waste on plants.

    The current level of water at Thumbe is sufficient to supply water for five to six days. On March 29 water at Thumbe Dam from which the city gets its water supply, is sufficient only for 9 days. What is this !!!!!!!!!!!

    I stayed at Ahmedabad, Gujarat for 50 years It has a rainfall of 12 -20 inches, Population 60 lakhs and temperatures in summer 42-46 degrees, Mangalore has a rainfall of 120 inches, Population 6 lakhs and temperatures in summer 38 degrees, yet Ahmedabad always had a daily water supply while today in Mangalore we get water on alternate days( odd even scheme?)!! Why are we not following the Gujarat model? When will we get Niru Bhagya?Mangaloreans can learn a lot from Gujaratis apart from business, savings and investment.

    Gujarat is a drought hit state. Dont think Gujarat is only Ahmedabad or Baroda. There are lot of villages in Gujarat where the situation is worst than you can imagine.There the cities are developed Villages are still in 1947 era.

    ..you mean we will die of thirsty but wont accept anything from Gujrat..height of...atleast now local administration to wake up & find long term solution..its not roCket sceince..No need studt tour o switzerland..clean every lake, do dredging, stop illegal encroachment of lakes by land mafia..and dont allow people to fill the lakes even if its a private property..this will solve 90% of the water problem..we have to appreciate a some youngster under NAMO group,guidance by Mr.CHAKRAVARTI SULIBALE, rejuvenated dozens of lakes in several district..liek this activities should be carried out in & around DK/Udupi with public awarness/involvement..

    I have seen many years before in Gujarat Water is supplying from camel cart tankers. Mangalore Model is better than Gujarat Model.

    Vajpayee Govt had foreseen this and proposed interjoiing of rivers fromt he North where there is wter surplus getting wasted into bay of Bengal. By now the project would have been completed. But the Dongis opposed this and thereafter scrapped this as they knew this would credit BJP. Now suffer the consequences.

    Its time for Seawater Desalination Plant. it is costly affair but at the end of the day there is no other go. Verrappa Moily and Sadananada Gowda has already sold Mangalore for their political ambitions. only option left is Seawater Desalination Plant, Coming years it will be more worse.
