Bengaluru: Woman fights off man who tried to abduct, molest her

Bengaluru, May 3 (DHNS): An unidentified man tried to abduct a 22-year-old woman standing outside her PG accommodation and molest her at an under-construction building near Kathriguppe circle, in south-west of the city.

The incident took place on the night of April 23 and came to light on Monday after a news channel aired the incident, following which the PG owner lodged a complaint. The abduction bid was captured by a CCTV camera nearby.

“The police registered a case, collected CCTV footage, constituted two teams to arrest the suspect,” DCP (South) B S Lokesh Kumar told DH.

The police have detained a suspect.

According to the victim, who is from Manipur, her friend dropped her near Maramma temple near the PG accommodation on April 23.

“I received a call on my mobile and was speaking. Suddenly, a man came from behind, grabbed me and took me to an under-construction building. He assaulted me when I raised an alarm. I resisted and bit his palm and managed to free myself. He dropped me, pushed me down, abused and vanished after seeing some residents,” she said.

“The man attempted to outrage my modesty. He did not steal any of my valuables. Any girl could become a victim like me,” she added. The victim informed the PG owner, Manjunath, about the incident. Manjunath then informed the C K Achchukattu police.

“Our men received a call about the incident around 9.45 pm and rushed there. They requested the victim to lodge a complaint, but she called up her friend for consultation. The girl decided against lodging the complaint as she felt it may adversely affect her,” said Kumar.

Manjunath said the girl vacated the PG the next morning and went to her friend’s house in Indiranagar. “I presumed that she has lodged a complaint and did not approach the police. I decided to lodge the complaint on Monday after a news channel aired the incident,” said Manjunath.

The police detained a suspect, a cab driver and a resident of Kanakapura Road, late on Monday night.

The suspect, Akshay (23), is also involved in an attempt-to-murder case in Gangapathinagar.

The suspect has told the police that he was on night duty on April 23 and had come to Kathriguppe circle.

Akshay has accepted to having tried to abduct the victim under the influence of alcohol. The police have also recorded the victim’s statement.
