Sullia: Two lose lives in Omni-container collision

Sullia, May 3: Two persons died on the spot, while two more suffered serious injuries in an accident which occurred at Goonadka near Sampaje on Mani-Mysuru highway on Monday May 2. This accident comes in the wake of a series of accidents occuring in Sampaje, Goonadka and Kallugundi areas after the highway was widened.


The deceased were Yousuf (45) from Kadanga in Virajpet, Kodagu, who was driving the Omni vehicle, and Maqbool (55), from the same village. The collision occurred between a Maruti Omni van and a container coming from the opposite direction. The injured persons, identified as Zulaikha and Saleem, stand admitted into a hospital at Mangaluru.

It is said that the container truck that was speeding,hit the Omni hard. The vehicle was badly mangled in the accident.

It is gathered that Maqbool was accompanying Saleem, who is sick, and his wife, Zulaikha, in an Omni owned by his neighbour, Yousuf, for getting Saleem treated at a hospital at Mangaluru. Maqbool was a coolie while Yousuf was involved with areca nut and coffee trading besides running vehicles on hire basis.

Maqbool is survived by wife and two sons, while Yousuf has left behind wife and four sons. The bodies were taken to Kadanga after conducting post mortem at the government hospital at Sullia.

A case about the accident stands registered in Sullia town police station.
