Keenan-Reuben murder case: All 4 accused found guilty, get life sentence

Mumbai, May 5 (PTI): Five years after Mumbai youths Keenan and Reuben were brutally murdered while trying to save their women companions from a group of hooligans harrassing them, a special court here today sentenced all the four accused in the case to life imprisonment.

Special Women's Court Judge Vrushali Joshi said the accused will be in jail for the remainder of their life.

She held the accused--Jitendra Rana, Sunil Bodh, Satish Dulhaj and Dipak Tival--guilty of murder, outraging the modesty of women and other charges of the Indian Penal Code, in a case which sparked outrage and debate about the safety of women in public places.

Keenan Santos (24) and Reuben Fernandez (29) were stabbed by eve-teasers after a scuffle at Amboli in suburban Andheri on October 20, 2011.

The victims were attacked when they tried to shield their women companions from a group of men who harassed, abused and misbehaved with them outside an eatery at Amboli in suburban Andheri.

The group, after retreating, returned to the spot with over ten aides and brutally assaulted Keenan and Reuben in full public view.

Keenen's father Valerian Santos welocmed the verdict, saying it was a "victory for all" but regretted the delay in getting the justice.

"I am not saying that the culprits should be caught and sent to gallows immediately. I am only saying that judicial system should be speeded up", he said, reacalling the emotional breakdown of Chief Justice of India over such delay.

Ujjwal Nikam, Special public prosecutor, said all charges of the prosecution have been proved in the case.

"There is direct evidence to show that the accused were eve-teasing and molesting girls when the victims tried to stop it. This is a pre-determined murder and the accused had even threatened them with their life and had come back with weapons to attack them", Nikam said.

Nikam said the success in the case largely owed to the victims of harrassment. "The testimony of the two girls bolstered our case and their deposition was very detailed," he said.

He,however, did not press for capital punishment for the accused as the conspiracy charge against them was not proved and the case did not fall under the category of the 'rarest of the rare'.

Valerian, who looked calm and composed after hearing the verdict, said "Today all I can say is that the verdict is a victory to all. This victory is not mine, this is Keenan's and Reuben's victory which I have been hoping to give them as a present. Keenen's birthday has gone in March, I had hoped to gift him this," said Valerian.
"I am happy that the court has granted life imprisonment to them. I am also happy that the molestation section (charge) was also applied," he said.

While Keenan succumbed to his injuries the same day, Reuben died 10 days later.
Police arrested all the four accused a day after the incident.

In October, 2012, the court framed charges against the accused for murder, conspiracy and molestation. In the trial the prosecution examined 245 witnesses.

The incident had shocked the city after the youngsters were brutally assaulted in full public view as bystanders and hotel staffers rendered no help.

In this matter, Mumbaikars should express gratitude.
Local politicians have fully supported the victims, aggrieved parties and their families.
They didn't play politics in this matter.

Rather its relief to these murderers and they must be happy about this judgement and they have a clear hope to come out now using Indian fragile system for sure or be in jail lazily . Killed were 2 upcoming good looking youngsters and was a 100% Fit Case to give capital punishment to murderers. It was a deliberate murder as group revisited the spot after molesting girls and moreover victims were young boys! . These incidents had happened in mangalore too and latter it was compromised . In past in mangalore. Some local leaders had helped the culprits guiding them the way out. As the case proceeds Goonda will compromise with victims offering them money . Moreover case takes so long for judiciary its sufficient time to twist the truth and mind . BY this Long time Enemy can turn into a friend too.

Landmark judgement and well accepted by people at large(society).

(.....Special Women's Court Judge Vrushali Joshi said the accused will be in jail for the remainder of their life!!!.)

That is more important in today's legal process!!! Never the less it took 4 plus years but justice has been delivered and the message is loud and clear....Time has come now to appoint more lady judges in "Indian Legal System" as we are doing in coroprate companies(more & more ladies take charge of running the helm of affairs!!!)

Acchhe Din....Which politician/political party wants to take credit now???

Our present P.M offered CJI(Chief Justice of India) in the recent past a "Closed Door Meeting" to discuss...!!! after he broke down while delivering a lecture/speech at a C.M's meeting... due to "delay in clearing pending cases across the nation"

I am sure his entire aggrieved family & friends had a great sigh of relief(solace) and hope their(Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez's)souls will finally rest in "complete peace" because they truly deserve this judgement of court for their 'just and noble' deeds.

Bharat Mata Ki Jai Ho...Jai Hind...

This murder was extensively covered in Mumbai News papers those days and now finally wound up with life time sentence. A death sentence would have been more appropriate in these kind of case. RIP Rueben and Keenan.

Congratulations to all those (especially the parents, relatives & close friends of the deceased) who relentlessly fought for getting justice, for the brutal murder of Keenan and Reuben.

Although the lost lives cannot be replaced, a strong message has been sent out to rowdies and anti-social elements that their wrong actions will not be tolerated in a civilised society. Rather, they will have to pay a very heavy penalty for such wrongdoing.

Let these criminals rot in jail. Now they will realize what suffering is. But surely they will move high court then supreme court, battle is not yet over this is fight to the finish. This verdict should be upheld right upto apex court.

Long live Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez who gave their life to save the honour of women.

Finally, after 5 years, the real justice is done by Mumbai Special court. The culprits are awarded life imprisonment, not usual life imprisonment(normally 14 years) but, life imprisonment till death, (not coming out due to good conduct from jail, like others).
