Mangaluru, May 8: On account of manyfold increase in the economic activity in the city, the city is growing fast. With increase in number of vehicles, population, and business establishments, pollution level is rising. Particularly because of poisonous smoke emitted by vehicles and dust, health of people, particularly traffic policemen who are always on duty on roads, is getting adversely affected, as per a study report conducted by Anti Pollution Drive (APD), a city-based organization.

Vehicular pollution happens to be a major contributor to environment pollution in cities. Toxic gases like sulphur, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide, the study has found, adversely affect on the health of people. Traffic policemen and other staff, and children attending schools and colleges are affected more by the rising pollution. There has been an alarming increase in the number of children attending schools and colleges getting afflicted by asthma, the study claims.

Many traffic division staff including policemen suffer from ailments related to lungs. 22.3 percent of policemen in traffic department with less thatn five years in traffic segment are suffering from health complications connected with lungs.

APD undertook this study in association with the department or respiratory medicines, Yenepoya Medical College here. Assistant police commissioner of the city police, Uday Nayak, actively took part in the health check up drives. A number of officers and staff got involved with this study and thereby extended support for the study, it is gathered.
