Lovers attempt suicide - girl dies, boy survives second attempt

Daijiworld Media Network - Bhatkal (SP)

Bhatkal, May 8: Young lovers tried to end their lives by hanging together from a cashew tree at Sherugarakeri at Bailoor near here on the morning of Saturday May 7. The girl died in this incident, while the boy is fighting for life at a hospital.

Mallika Manjunath Naik (17), a resident of Bailoor, lost her life in this incident. Arun Keshav Naik (24) from the same village was admitted into hospital in serious condition.

The lovers are distant relatives. The two were in love since the last some years. Arun was earlier working as postman. It is said that he resigned from this job a few days back, and joined work as lineman of electricity supply company.

The locals tried their best to save the lovers, after learning about the incident. The youth, who came to know in spite of his precarious condition that his lover had died, suddenly wriggled himself out from their hold, ran towards the sea, and jumped into it in an attempt to kill himself. The locals followed him, rescued him from the sea, and provided preliminary treatment at the government hospital here. Later, he was taken to Manipal for further treatment.

A case about the incident stands registered in Murudeshwar police station. It is thought that the lovers were dismayed at the disapproval of their relationship by their respective families.

Totally agree with Flavian. The boy needs thorough counseling so he does not try his stunts at death again. This is so sad.

Very very difficult situation indeed. Mad love & madness.
She was seventeen and they were in love .......? since last few years. How long someone can guard the Arun? I pity the parents. The boy needs counseling. We do not want yet another tragedy.
