Vinayak Baliga murder - Vedike scoffs at efforts to tarnish GSB image

Daijiworld Media Network -Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 9: GSB Rakshana Vedike has termed news items appearing in a section of the media linking GSB community and Lord Venkataramana Temple with the murder of RTI activist, Vinayak P Baliga, on March 21 this year, as efforts aimed at tarnishing the image of the community and its temple. "Vested interests have been unnecessarily trying to sully the image of our community and temple by spreading baseless rumours and unsubstantiated information, with the tacit purpose of creating confusion in the minds of the general public. This is part of a systematic conspiracy aimed at bringing bad name to GSB community and their temple," it has stated.

The Vedike, which happens to be a forum functioning under GSB Temples Union, insisted that neither the GSB community nor the temple had any role in the murder of Baliga. To hold consultations about the developments which have the potential of giving rise to unnecessary confusion among the people of the community, a consultation meeting of representatives of temples and dignitaries from the community is being held at 5 pm on May 9 at Konchady Lord Venkataramana Temple. The Vedike added that it has been decided also to organize a protest meeting on a large scale to register resentment of the community against these unsavury developments.

"GSB community believes in hard work and total devotion and surrender to the Lord. It believes that the Lord will punish the guilty. The temple managing committee and the devotees have total faith in the law of the land, and believes that its members do not take part in activities of this kind. Hence,we do not believe in the need to seek recourse to ulterior means to achieve indivivual objectives. But some vested interests are unnecessarily spreading false information through social websites with the specific aim of bringing bad name to the community," it stated.

Through the release, the Vedike also said that it has been extending full cooperation for the investigation into the above murder, and is also prepared to continue to do so in future.

"Lord Venkataramana Temple at car street here is one of the prestigious temples of GSB community. In the renovation and reconsecration festival held two years back, no irregularities did happen. We have provided all information as sought to the court in this respect. The programmes and dealings of the temple have always remained disciplined and transparent. The temple has nothing do with this murder. The false information campaign undertaken against Kashi Math and its spiritual head are concocted stories that are being floated unnecessarily and without basis," it added.

The Vedike noted that the suit filed by the late Vinayak Baliga about the alleged irregularities in the temple are under investigation in the court, duly pointing out that any malicious campaigns being undertaken during this period are tantamount to contempt of court. "Bunder police station inspector, Shantaram, had visited the temple after the murder of Baliga, and we have extended complete cooperation for the investigation, Our cooperation will continue to be provided. Unnecessary pressure is being brought on police department, and false information campaign is being carried out through media and social websites, which have been conveying wrong message to the society. The members of GSB community should overlook these efforts, and continue to retain their faith in the Lord, temple, and the Math, and also do everything in their command to uphold the dignity and stature of the community," the press statement urged.

Protest march should have an agenda such as against the government bodies or any organization or vested interests so that the genuine requirement is conveyed in a strong way.

In case of Baliga's murder, police, court, press, rationalists are all working on overtime and why there should be a protest?

GSB Community is definitely standing against Mr. Baliga. It is doing every bit of what it is supposed to do.

Police should do a professional job in nabbing the culprits without fear or favour. But, insinuations in the media to tarnish image of a community is not only mischievous, but can be counter productive.

When we are not sure what is going on exactly whya are we blaming the community. If one person has done a mistake it doesn't mean that whole community needs to be blamed. Here in the case media is directly blaming the temple and the religious institutions which is wrong if the person has comitted a crime he should be punished by law if he escapes from.there je will seriously get punished by god. But simply spoling the image Of a prestigious Temple and it's institutions is wrong which I feel

The leaders of the GSB community did not even create a whimper about the murder of one of the most devoted in their community, let alone a protest. Now they are planning to organize a protest. Against whom and for what? For people bringing to public attention the RTI activities of Mr. Baliga?

Bring places of worship for Financial Auditing. In Name of God keep your accounts clear. I am saying this to all places of worship involving money. Tax the places of worship as you tax the individuals. And thief in name of God are caretakers and trustee who pocket the money..... the caretaker of one of the temples in Mangalore used Temple jewellery to keep security on personal loans. there are many incidents in Places of worship where money issue has caused disharmony among people. Lets bring a viable and strong solution to distinguish between Money and Worship because finally devotees will turn into atheist because of misunderstanding. and this is way real.

Does smoke gets emitted if there isn't fire ? Why is the so-called vedike dusting off their shoulders ? Prove yourself saintly - help the police in arresting Naresh Shenoy ! Who is Baliga ? Their own ? Who is Shenoy ? Their own ? When everything is happening in-house, whats wrong in news coming out ? How long can they gag media/press ?

India is a free nation where the press brings into print, news from all arena. Tarnishing of a community surely happens if members do deeds deserving such a honor. Do good, feel good.

I fully agree, GSB community is hard working & peace loving by nature. There should not be any doubt in this.
But, I am also sure, some of the prestigious leaders of GSB community of Mangalore must be aware of whereabouts of NaMo Nari.

So, please cooperate with Police & wash your hands.

I have followed up the media reports on Baliga murder very closely and I have not seen any systematic tarnishing of image of the temple. Secondly it is incorrect to assume and say entire GSB community has been targeted. GSB community has been part of Mangalore from yester years and are part and parcel of Mangalore.

On the same note, there are bad apples( every society) and they may feel they represent a group of people. We need to get rid of these people. Getting rid of these bad elements does good than harm and increase rather than tarnish the image of the community.

Coming to the prestige: it is incorrect to put prestige into the God almighty. Human worship God who does not need our prestige. Though not directly mentioning RTI activist Prof Nayak the report implies that . Professor Nayak may have short coming like all of us. But One thing he has is integrity. It is his associate who is murdered mercilessly. There is motive. Professor Nayak represents all like minded people in Mangalore. At the core of the issue is : silencing of people who are critical to the functioning of certain irregularities. Is this press conference just that?

Any community( including GSB) is better off without the bad elements. To say there are no bad apples ( we believe ....) in itself casts doubts in the minds of readers.
