Sand dealers lift sand from Thumbay dam instead of silt, DC annoyed

Bantwal, May 9: Sand dealers have reportedly misused the orders of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner to remove silt from the Thumbay vented dam. Instead the sand traders have allegedly only lifted sand from the dam and transported it. And because of the deposits of the silt, the water level in the dam looks higher. This shocking development has come to light during deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim's visit to the dam site early morning on Monday, May 9.











The water level at the dam stands presently at 4.6 feet and it is assumed that nearly 3 feet deep silt is filled in it. The deputy commissioner in the meeting related to drinking water held in Mangaluru on Thursday, May 5 had asked that the silt from the dam and on the concrete lid covering the well in the river be removed urgently.

The deputy commissioner, realizing that the scarcity of drinking water may further become acute if the work is delayed, came for inspection on Monday. However those who were entrusted to remove the silt had only collected sand, heaped it up in the pump house premises and were seen loading it in the lorries. The two machines in the river were only removing sand instead of silt. Besides, three JCBs, five tipper lorries and two lorries loaded with sand were also found there.

The DC, looking at those developments was so annoyed that, he ran around the premises unable to stand in a place. Taking the pump house assistant engineer to task, he asked him whether he is allowing illegal sand mining when the people are crying for water. “Shall I take legal action against you for keeping quiet even when these things are happening in your presence”, he asked.

DC ordered sand the mining the machines to stop work immediately and ordered the JCBs and Hitachi machines out from the pump house compound. He warned the pump house officials that he will take legal action even if a grain of sand goes out from the premises.

Zilla panchayat member Chandraprakash Shetty has however said that the sand was removed to increase the depth as the water in the well got polluted and changed colour while removing silt.

    First check how many of the leaders or sachivas have accepted bribes for sand mining and deforesting. Without they blessing this could not happen.Then talk.

    We need a DC like of yester years Mr.Ponnuswamy, who had his ways to deal with all mishappennings. Sad that current DC is trying all his ways to stop the illegal sand mining, but I guess he too is under pressure from the ruling govt. But Ponnuswamy never entertained any govt or any minister and always followed the law. Get him back on SOS and he is the right person to deal with all wrong things.

    Now Mr Ibrahim has seen through His own eyes,how the Corruption works in Mangalore and around it. Kannur -Adyar has so many sights where so much Sand is hidden,and Rogue Government Officials along with Police knows it. Part of the Profit is shared by them all. Adyar Panchayat Members see it from their own office while their own Members involved in it. I ask the NGO Members to go behind the Srinivas College in Valachil and stand near the edge of the Hill. You will see how the sand is lifted from Netravathi using JCB backhoe. Go to Benjana Padau area and look around and see how much sand is hidden on hillsides and behind boundary walls of some Sand smugglers. On your way to Bajpe Airport look around the River near the Bridge and you will see Sand is removed. Also Water is pumped out through tankers and sold.
    As long as the the Corruption is alive,Mangaloreans, along with all Indians will suffer. Prime Minister is traveling overseas for the benefit of wealthy instead of traveling inside the Country and see what is happening and what suffering people face. Because His policy is that You scratch My back and I will scratch Yours to wealthy Lords.

    Silt. Soft, gooey, mucky black pond bottom stuff oozing between toes, staining shoes past ankles. Decaying organic contents of silt smell like rotten eggs. Wade the edge of your pond, and take a look.

    Nature gives us silt, naturally. It is as normal as fallen leaves, grass clippings and fish poop. As a matter of fact, fallen leaves, grass clipping and fish stuff become ingredients of silt on pond bottoms all over the world.

    To know silt is to understand silt.

    Merriam Webster’s collegiate dictionary defines silt as “loose sedimentary material with rock particles usually 1/20 millimeter or less in diameter.” I know that’s true because Otto looked it up two issues ago.

    The loosest of all soils, silt collects on top of more solid, clay based pond bottom soils. From there, water currents and wave action send silt into convenient areas for deposit. Take a look where water enters your pond. That’s the most likely spot to find new deposits of silt, washed there by recent rains.

    If truth be known, most silt into a new pond comes from freshly disturbed soils of construction. As the pond fills, neighboring loose dirt washes downward, eroding shorelines, and pitching fine particles into silt bars and banks, deposited near inflow areas. Don’t step in it. There is a difference between silt and Shinola.

    As a pond ages, less dirt comes in, but more organic matter collects. Water composts leaves, twigs, clippings and fish waste, and plops these new deposits on top of older ones. As time goes, silt layers become deeper. Finally, we perceive silt to be a problem. How do we know? Ponds lose depth.When silt is exceptionally thick and wet, it takes a machine such as this trackhoe to remove it.

    If you think about it, a pond or lake is built, and then begins to age. Part of this process is accumulation of soils. Loose soils, silt, become home to cattails, reeds and rushes, usually in the upper parts of a pond…where water flows in.

    for crushing the boulders to get fine aggregate...in various sizes/grades..for construction industry..
    make filters and modern technology to avoid pollution in environment..
    study this practice in FUJAIRAH-UAE
    this is one solution..

    Please enlighten me - isn't silt, is the other name for sedimentation that is resting at the bottom of collected water ? Sand, being heavier, settles under the silt. How can silt be removed without the top level water separated ? And, how can sand remain at the bottom while silt is sucked out ?

    Some expert enlightenment please...
