Mangaluru, May 10: Biodegradable waste produced in the city will be converted into organic compost and will be sold to the farmers by Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) within next few months. This has been made possible after MCF, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and Unique Waste Management Company signed an agreement in the third week of April. The agreement copy was handed over to MCF and Unique Waste Management Company at the MCC office by Mayor Harinath on Tuesday, May 10.

Addressing the gathering, Harinath said that "It is a very good agreement to handle the large amount of waste produced in the city. The corporation will get the subsidy of Rs 1,000 per tonne from the union government,"

As per the agreement between the parties concerned, the waste will be converted into compost by Unique Waste Management Company and the MCC has to pay Rs 1.5 lac per month to the company. The compost will be marketed by MCF and they have to pay Rs 2,500 per tonne in return.

The city produces about 275 tonnes of waste per day which is dumped at the dumping yard Pachanady.

MCC commissioner Gopalakrishna and chief whip Sashidhar Hegde were present on the occasion.

When some positive remedial method is going to be followed why people criticize such action. Waste dumping area has sent enough irritation and un- easiness to lots of area in the vicinity and also the present are could be expanded if modern disposal method is not implemented.
The compost can be used for coconut and other fruits bearing trees, if not for growing vegetables.

We know that we have a serious garbage problem. But what is not so well known is that the problem is not to find the right technology for waste disposal. The problem is to integrate the technology with a system of household level segregation so that waste does not end up in landfills, but is processed and reused. What is clear is that there will be no value from waste, for energy or material, if it is not segregated. But this is where our waste management system stops very short. It is the responsibility of the urban local body to ensure compliance with segregation of waste at source according to the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules 2015. This means it must get citizens to segregate waste at the household and then ensure that this segregated waste - wet and dry, compostable and recyclable - is collected separately and then transported separately for processing.

First of all hats off to the Mangalore Mayor. very good initiative. Secondly elated to see overwhelming positive response from readers. This report comes within 10 days of my observation that one could use vegetable waste from malls as compost. Lots of unsold fruits and vegetables are thrashed into the AWM vans every morning from supermarkets around Mangalore.
My only concern is the cost and that the compost should be sold at subsidized rate to Mangaloreans. For the small farmers in an around mangalore affordability will increase the consumption of compost and also create awareness about this precious resource. For children to see the practical use is a lessen that the text books cannot teach therefore is effective in educating the future generation.

This idea will work until people are educated and biodegradable waste is separated by people which is collected separately. Last year, there was a clear notice with pictures showing how to segregate biodegradable waste from rest of the garbage. Nobody bothered but the poster still hanging on my Kitchen wall. Where there is a will there is a way.

In a country such as India, with ever growing population and also with ever growing affluence, waste disposal will continue to be a problem. Unused waste can cause environmental problems.

In research and development for conversion and treatment of waste disposal, specially converting waste into organic compost will be of tremendous use for agriculture so that we can produce more food to feed the growing public.

India has all the wisdom and resources to research on anything and everything, specially the invention on anything that will benefit the environment to be kept clean and free of any pollution or contamination.

We congratulate all the City officials for being innovative and forward looking so that all our waste can be converted into various productive purposes that will benefit the people and also the places.

Congratulations for your good work, and wishing you best of success in many more innovative ideas in the future.
