Water scarcity due to favours done to sand mafia: Krishna Palemar

Mangaluru, May 12: "Fixing of wooden planks to store water in Thumbay vented dam was delayed by 2 months in order to favour the sand mafia. This lead to serious water scarcity in the city and put people into hardship," alleged former state minister Krishna J Palemar.

Palemar was addressing the press meet at district BJP office here on Thursday May 12.

"Water should have been stored in the dam from the month of November and December. But instead to favour the sand mining lobby, water storing process started during the month of January and February. This is because the district in-charge minister wanted to help the sand mafia. His supporters are running the illegal sand mining. Due to this, people in the city are facing the water problem. Coastal area never faced any drought like situation in the past. But due to the delay in storing water in the dam we have faced this situation,"

On the decision of MCC to get water from Kudremukh’s Lakya dam, Palemar said "Without testing and purifying, 2 MGD water from Lakya dam is being given to the people of the city. This may create health problems. When BJP government was in power KIOCL Ltd (formerly Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd) had agreed to provide the water purification plant. But Congress government failed to continue the process."

Criticizing the state government Palemar said, "For the past three years there has been no development. After assuming power, they have inaugurated the programmes initiated by the BJP government. Government has involved in the hatred politics".

Palemar also said that the state government is not continuing the programmes like Bhagya Lakshmi Yojana, Suvarna Bhoomi, Suvarana and Grama programmes, initiated by the BJP when it was in the power.

Former mayor Shankar Bhat said “Mayor should answer how much quantity of water is pumped and how much of it reaches city. 35% of the pumped water from Thumbay vented dam goes waste through the illegal pipes connected to the main pipeline. There is a mafia behind this. Political representatives are silent because for the vote bank."

Roopa D Bangera, Kishore Rai and others were present.

Issue here is when was the dam closed to collect and store water. Instead, most of the readers here are showing their bias against Palemar. I stay in Panemangalore and always found that Thumbe dam would be closed latest by Dec but this year it was closed in late Jan. This was due to Dam doors being in poor state due lack of maintenance. If dam doors are closed in time, water backs up to PAnemangalore by Jan itself. Sand Mafia has taken advantage of the situation to make hay.

Krishna Palimar is a very honest man. Even in his own business he is utmost honest. He has helped so many people to come up in life. He has got so many young people jobs in the Gulf and even paid for their tickets. So don't comment wrongly on such a good, helpful and God fearing person of Mangalore.

It is a well established fact that the district in charge minister is good for nothing and has done absolutely nothing for the betterment of this district. Ours is a district of educated people and a good minister in stead of the current district in charge would have resulted in all round development of the region. It is really unfortunate that the district has been entrusted to a useless and inept person who has nothing to show by way of his contribution. If rumours are to be believed, it has even been stated that neither does he involve in any development, he even puts a spoke in the wheel of those who want to take this district forward. Be that as it may, this Krishna Palemar has no right to say a word about what is happening. It is an open secret that when he was the minister, he had gone to great lengths to get his things done. His real estate business had benefited a lot when he was at the helm of affairs and he would do well to remember that. The long and short of it is that these people, whether they belong to the Congress or the BJP do not work for the people, they only work for themselves and their chamchas.

Thank God for the water scarcity in Mangalore. Whatever the reasons contributed by the politicians and the citizens, water scarcity has made the people realise that natural resources cannot be replenished by the politicians and the citizens if they are wasted recklessly. At Many homes taps are left open, water going into the sewage chambers of their homes. Reckless disregard by some people in the usage of water. Hope in future the politician and the citizens will work hand in hand to conserve water and protect the environment. Krishna Palemar should practice what he preaches instead of watching "!!!Movies" in the Assembly. Tons of sand under the Mangalore Port deepening project was offloaded, during the BJP rule in Karnataka and Palemar was the District Minister in Charge of South Kanara, none one raised their voice? Everything was done in the name of development.

We have plenty of water in our Wells. But way back in 2012 when BJP was in power at MCC we 34 houses of Manila Mangalore requested MCC to lay new sewage pipeline as the sewage has polluted all the Wells of Mangalore. When they refused we filed a consumer court case against MCC. In 2015 we won the case and huge compensation was awarded to us. The Congress which is in power now instead of replacing the worn out sewage pipeline which is laid 30 years back is fighting the case. The case is now pending in the National Commission, New Delhi. Now people of Mangalore test your well water. It is sewage water for sure. If you do not fight MCC will continue to provide sewage water.
