Kundapur: Hit by car while crossing, woman succumbs to injuries

Kundapur, May 14: A car had hit a pedestrian woman on national highways in front of Saligrama town panchayat on Saturday, May 14, during noon. The seriously injured woman was admitted to a private hospital but she succumbed to injuries without responding to treatment.






The deceased woman is identified as Lachi Poojarthi (64) from Saligrama Parampalli. She has left behind two daughters and two sons.

Lachi Poojarthi was on her way to attend a special function. When she was crossing the national highway, a car coming from Udupi towards Kota hit her. In the process, her head hit the road divider and injured her seriously. She was initially taken to a private hospital for emergency treatment and later to a private hospital in Manipal for further treatment. However, she died while under treatment.

The windshield of the car was broken due to the impact of the accident.

The locals have requested the police department to keep a barricade as road accidents have been happening here for the last few days.

A police case stands registered at Kota police station.

    Why is not district officials & administration planning to construct overhead walk ways near crowded junctions or towns?. The highway is wide the vehicles have increased still people has to take a chance and cross? this is bad for the pedestrian as well as vehicle drivers.
    Please think it over.

    Even if overhead walkways are built, i seriously doubt we would be using it. Thats in our nature. think for a second, If you are 100 mtrs from the nearest overhead walkway and the other side of the road which you want to cross is only 30mts, would you take the overhead walkway which would add more than 250 mtrs distance.

    Any accident, people keep blaming the vehicle driver! No Doubt, most the accidents occur because of wreck less driving. Where is the Traffic Police, what is their duty! If the Traffic Police take some stern action on such drivers & the Drivers follow the basic Road Rules, definitely most the Road Accidents can be avoided. Now its for the Public to see that the Traffic Police are doing their duty!!!

    We need foot bridges not barricades. During the day time we can notice the barricades,at night barricades become nightmare for the drivers as they will have no idea till they reach near the barricades as there are no reflectors. Our engineers should suggest foot bridges to government to be installed on highway.

    This is very tragic. No one knows the time and date of death. Only God knows. I feel no crossing to be allowed on the highway roads.My heartfelt condolences to her children ...near and dear ones. May God give them strength and courage to bear this loss. May her soul Rest in Peace in Heaven.

    This national highway of Bellary Reddy brothers is full of design flaws.

    1.There is no emergency by lane to stop the vehicle.
    2.Comparing to the vehicular density,insufficient lanes and this project is already failed.
    3.Quality of the work is substandard.No internation standar road marks.
    4.Insufficient exits for villagers living parallel to the road.
    5.No overbridge,pedistrian crossing,fencing,accident proof barriers.

    Where are the road taxes and vehicular taxes go,when every highway in India is build on 'build,operate and transfer' basis?
    2.Why the government doesn't publish the cost expenditure and number of years to leased for toll collection?

    Every one is blaming drivers! But roads are meant for vehicles!. By looking at the pictures one thing is sure, the driver has been driving properly and there is no mistake of his!. The problem lies with the NHAI and the company that is building this road!. 99% of the places where the road crosses the busy places, they have not provided a safe passage for people to pass through!. Every where people and vehicles have to compete with each other to cross these points!. No where in the world, people cross roads so dangerously on the high ways!. But still these companies are looting people by imposing hefty toll without giving basic facilities!. How can this road be called a high way if barricades are placed every where which themselves are very unscientific and are a major cause of accidents!. People are donating barricades with their advertisement and police are placing them haphazardly without even considering basic rules!. 100% of the barricades are placed unscientifically!

    Dear Public,please note that it does not matter for Lawless,Arrogant drivers whether there is barricade or there is traffic Police. Pride is gone into the Nerve System of these People. There was a time some of these Arrogant People did not have a pot to Piss in. Now they got vehicle in hand through Corruption,and through illegal means.
    For example with Compassion towards the pedestrians,I have installed few dozen "No Park" Signs through out Mangalore at request of Traffic Police. But Doctors and Lawyers who are supposed to be highly Educated acting Stupid,park their Cars right under the sign.
    I have installed "Bus Stop" signs to avoid traffic jam and for Human Safety. But buses stop wherever they feel like and Educated People such as Medicos and other Educated ones stop away from Bus Stop.
    I am installing or placing Barricades for Traffic Safety purpose at request of Traffic Police. Road Contractors,Program Organizers and others remove these barricades to use for their special agenda and leave them wherever they took them.
    Few Stupid Rickshaw fellows and Bikers as well, push the Barricade to make a U Turn thus creating road hazard.
    Only way to stop these accidents is through Public Involvement.
    Sometimes through force to stop these speeders. Also time has come for Public to force the Bus drivers to stop their irritating Horns.

    Very tragic. In a high population density routes, there is need for pedestrian crossing bridges (disabled and bicycle crossing friendly). The cost of these bridges can be recovered through advertisement displays on both the sides. From Mangalore to Kundapur, there is need for at least 25 or more similar bridges. This should have been included in the original plan. After hearing these tragedies, officials will hopefully wake-up.
