Mangaluru: Blocking of water supply to Surathkal, Panambur irks people

Mangaluru, May 15: The deputy commissioner (DC), on instructions from district administration blocked water flowing from Thumbay to Surathkal, Panambur and Kulai areas saying that the area will get water from Lakya dam, causing drinking water problem in the area.

MLA Moideen Bava and corporators visited Panambur drinking water purification unit in Panambur and took the DC to task on Saturday, May 14.

Considering the water scarcity, water was being supplied here once in four days. As there was no electricity on Thursday and Friday, water could not be pumped here. The corporators say that despite supply of water through tankers, not even 30% need of water could be met. There are cries for water in Katipalla, Panambur, Baikampady, Kulai, Hosabettu, Surathkal area. However after the reality was explained, the DC has directed to let the water be supplied to these areas.

“The corporation is collecting taxes from Surathkal but showing step- motherly attitude to matters relating to development. The officials are providing facilities mainly to the city. Let the corporators of the area put forth their demands in the corporation meeting,” said businessman Palkan Hakeem.

    Are people of Panambur / Baikampady / Kulai / Hosabettu ? Iddiya / Surathkal & Mukka second class citizens ? Aren't we also paying the MCC tax ?

    so far city was getting water once in 3 days and surathkal once in 7 days. good that this discrepancy is corrected.after all taxes are paid by all

    No proper roads, No drinking Water, No Electricity, No proper medical facilities.. list continues. All we have is Democracy, Right to Talk & Right to Information. Things will not change if we don't change ourselves.

    How on earth could these guys expect supply from Lakya dam when the pipeline would have been badly corroded having not been used for such a long time and that it used to carry ore mixed with water, flushing this long pipeline would definitely take a lot of efforts and time, this decision looks utterly foolish!!

    I have read somewhere in one of the News Paper of one such Gulf Country….. A very popular columnist wrote that ….next world war or regional unrest will happens not because of anything else but “Water”…. If you talk of few Gulf or Asian Countries but war has started.

    In giving superb speeches we occupy a prominent place. It's surprising that the water from most of the rivers in the Western region dump water in the Arabian Sea and we simply watch the beauty.
    Authorities should think seriously how tap that water and make use for better purpose. This is a critical matter and swift action to resolve crises without further delay. We do not need underground/underwater trains project but people need drinking water when hit by droughts and water shortage. Even in the deserts of Arabia people get desalinated drinking water 24 x 7 x 365 days.

    Just imagine how Yettinahole project will take place when we are showing step- motherly attitude to matters relating water supply to our next door neighbors.

    Some of our corrupt politicians[irrespective of party they belongs to], very often visit Gulf Countries for fun & enjoyment. They r fully aware of the fact as to how water comes to your flats, through desalination plants from Sea. But these corrupt politicians have their own agenda as to how mint money instead of solving the citizen's problems.
