Medical negligence: Liver of woman cut off during family planning surgery

Daijiworld Media Network - Mysuru (SP)

Mysuru, May 15: In an incident which has brought to the fore recklessness of hospital staff, the surgeon who was to perform family planning operation on a woman cut off her liver instead. This happened at Cheluvamba Hospital in the city, which has hogged limelight sometime back, after a number of pregnant and purpural women had died there within a short period. The woman is now battling for her life.

Umapathi, working as junior engineer in Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company here, had admitted his wife, Roopashree (25) for family planning operation into the said hospital on May 11. She was made to wait in the operation room from morning to afternoon on May 13. The doctors had shifted her back to the ward in the afternoon, after claiming that she could not be operated upon because of low blood pressure.

In a short while thereafter, Roopashree complained of acute pail in the abdominal region. Her relatives then got to know that she had undergone surgery. Umapathi, who grew suspicious, immediately got her admitted into Apollo Hospital here. The doctors there revealed that Roopashree’s liver had been snipped off by the doctors of Cheluvamba Hospital.

Quality of those in medical profession in India has declined considerably. Starting a medical college especially under minority/deemed university category is a lucrative business. One crore for MBBS Seat and three crores for PG seat. Bluetooth technology for passing MBBS. These under-qualified will straight get PG seat on management quota while their counterpart with merit will slog for years for limited government seats. Private medical colleges in Karnataka has to surrender 25% of seats to Government as per consensual agreement. But it was withdrawn since 2008 with connivance with congress government. Most of the private medical colleges are run by congress politicians. In this back, NEET is a good initiative. If congress was in power, NEET would have remained as an elusive dream. See, no politician has welcomed the advent of NEET as a single window for medical education. Private lobby tried their best and brought the best lawyers like Kapil Sibal and Venugopal to defend, but Judges were adamant to clean the medical education system. Children from aristocratic families who is not fit even to sweep hospital floor can no longer dream of becoming medical professionals!! Of course, it will take years together to clean the system which is already polluted. But, Supreme Court has given hopes to the people by giving a strong message that criminals can no longer spoil the country in the name of democracy!!!?

Education and Health sector are the most profitable industry in India. Almost all of them are owned by useless politicians.
Till India gets a non-corrupt party, Supreme Court is our sole savior.

How pathetic ! When so many cases of malpractice have been already there, why nobody complained and action taken ? What did the doctor think while operating ? Trimming down weeds in the garden ? That snip out anything that obstructs you ? Utterly inhuman. If she was not taken to some other hospital, the malpractice would never come to the fore !

At the same time, we are in a modern era, where family planning can be done without undergoing surgery. Please take some time for the sake of your family and visit a gynecologist who will advise how simple it is to follow the cycle and avoid certain days. Embarrassment or shyness to seek help will cause you greater losses.

I can feel the pain of that woman and her family. Only healthy & disciplined life style will keep us away from doctors( not an apple a day !). I don't know if anyone agrees with me. This is my personal view.
