Mangaluru: Gigantic tree gets uprooted due to heavy rain

Mangaluru, May 15: A huge tree standing in ward No. 47 of the city corporation here got uprooted at around 3.30 am on Sunday, May 15 due to heavy rains and strong wind which swept the region. The mango tree which fell in this incident, was about 50 years old.
















The city and surrounding areas got heavy rain in the early morning on Sunday. The mango tree standing inside the compound of a house near KMC Hospital on Attavar Main Road fell across the road. This caused lot of problems for traffic movement. As the tree fell on high tension power lines, electricity supply to the area was cut off.

City corporator from the ward, Abdul Ravoof, came to the spot immediately, took precautionary measures, and called Mescom officials, who cut off power supply to the region. Fire brigade personnel and JCB operators deputed by city corporation removed the tree from the road thereafter.

    In a way it was good that the old big trees on Jeppu seminary road were cut although they gave a lot of shade and beauty. But these are soft wood trees and could uproot during a storm or monsoon season killing a few people. They could be dangerous at times.

    Why should the the City Corporation chop of trees to widen roads?, specially the 67 trees on Fr.Mullers road. They should know with this type of construction in Mangalore the tree will get uprooted themselves. Guys do not worry about the mangoes, this year they may not have been any fruit or the tree might sold and all the mangoes might have been plucked.

    It is not heavy rain. The tree was not having roots to support more over loose soil accompanied by swirling wind due to dry season caused the mishap. There is severe scarcity of water here and proper rainfall in the area only can improve the situation. More thundering and lightning than rain.

    The credit for the long awaited heavy rain in the city should definitely go to our MLA Mr. J.R. Lobo whose ardent prayers in a temple, mosque and church have atlast been heard by God after 10 days!!!

    50 years that tree gave fruits and shade and ultimately time approached indirectly. Better to introduce/grow new fast yielding saplings. Do not leave the place empty.
