Mangaluru, May 19: The voluntary bandh called by various anti Yettinahole project organisations has been peaceful so far with some minor incidents reported.

Activists of Netravathi Samyuktha Samrakshana Vedike held a peaceful protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue at Lalbhag in city.

Samyuktha Samrakshana Vedike president Vijay Kumar Shetty speaking on the occasion said “First of all, I congratulate the people of Dakshina Kannada for the cooperation they gave for the voluntary bandh. The response has been overwhelming. Secondly, if the stubborn government still does not listen to us, we will intensify the protest. We are committed to explore all the legal means to stop the Yettinahole project. District in-charge minister should realise that there has been tremendous response at his own constituency Bantwal. This is the time for him to act.”

Dinkar Shetty speaking on the occasion said “We are touched by the response by people. At least Ramanath Rai now should talk to the chief minister and convince him about the unity of people here. This is the time the government realises its mistake in moving ahead with the project.”

The vehicular movements on the city roads have been less compared to normal days.

Most of the shops till now, remain closed except milk parlours.

Untoward incidents have been reported in Pumpwell in city where tyre was burnt. A car burning incident too has been reported from Belthangady. It is not yet known about the connection of these incidents with the bandh.

A Volvo bus belonging to KSRTC, plying between Tirupati and Mangaluru via Bengaluru, was stoned by miscreants at Jyothi circle in city in the early hours.

Heavy police presence is seen in city. Bajrang Dal activists were seen protesting peacefully by sitting on the road at Nantoor.

As there was no public transport, commuters were put to a lot of inconvenience. People were seen waiting for buses, or looking for other forms of transport or walking distances. In some parts of the district, people voluntarily came forward in support of the bandh. In rural areas there was a lukewarm response towards the bandh. Most of the people used their private vehicles to travel in. On the whole, the bandh has affected the normal life of people.

The district in charge minister should hang his head in shame for the way he has let down this district. If he has any shame left in him, he has to take up the matter with the government and if the latter does not listen to him, he has to step down. Just resign. Do not cling on to your post and swallow the crumbs thrown at you, Mr. Rai. If you are sincere and faithful to the people who voted you, we will re-elect you. Otherwise, you will be consigned to the dust bin. And this applies not only to him. It applies to the other ministers and MLAs of the district. And yes, where on earth is that sly fox Nalin Kateel hiding? Where is he? Why is he silent now? Is his drama over?

At 10.30am 4 BD hooligans came in an auto and forced MACO petrol pump to close down failing which they threatened to break their glass panes. There was a policeman standing right there and he just didn't bother to take action. The CCTV camera of the pump will show it all if the police are interested.

Pradeep, agree with you. But one thing you should remember that in almost all meetings about Yettinahole, Udupi people have not been made part of them nor they were requested to support the Anti-Yettinahole project!. If the movement has to succeed then Undivided DK people have to be involved. Then no one will turn a evil eye towards us!. We are all Tulunadu people!!!

I agree John, But they could taken initiative and supported us. I never seen any one from Udipi talking about this. Govt is diverting Nethravati now and then Seetha river and then Sharavati (hope not). Then you will know the pain what we are suffering!!!

Politically all are involved in this Initially BJP and now COngress!!! They are playing politics between the poeple of DK and Kolar!!!!

Thsi should be the movement of people of Tulunadu (undevided DK) you can never trust politicians and they will always see the opportunity

Its just sad to see a bunch of hooligans blocking the highways, forcing shop to down their shutters and causing inconvenience to the common people. Most of these fellows look like jobless rowdies hired by political parties.
I wonder what our MLAs doing. Supporting the cause verbally is not the answer. Has any one of our "great" MLAs(including two ministers) from DK come forward and offered their resignations for the cause? They just sit back and enjoy the show while the general public suffers.
While I support the cause for which the strike was called, forcing people to support it is just foolish and stinks of goondaism.

I wish and pray that this bandh for a good cause is a complete success. Please refrain from indulging in violent actions. Do not destroy any private or public property. The aim of this bundh should be to open the government's eyes and to impress upon them that this project should be dropped at any cost.
