Cathedra in Latin means chair. A Cathedral is a church where a Bishop or Archbishop has a seat of authority or his Head Quarter.

Basilica is a church to which Pope has granted special privileges. There are 4 Major Basilicas in the world, all are in Rome. About 1680 Minor Basilicas are there in the world of which India has 27 including St.Lawrence, Attur. Mumbai Mount Mary, Goa Bom Jesus and St Mary in Bangalore are other Basilicas. In India, Kerala has highest number of Basilicas.

St.Lawrence Church's elevation was much deserved. St Lawrence, pray for us.

    Pedru
Your questions are very pertinent, but, I am not that knowledgeable on the subject to answer them. Udipi Bishop or the Rector of St Lawrence Church are the right people, who may explain to anybody who asks.

If someone wants to trust God as a supernatural almighty power, they need to visit St. Lawrence Church Attur during feast (January last week). No religion or politics can divide people there. The noncatholics and catholics are in equal numbers always. It is a well deserved honor from People's Pope.
