Udupi, May 22: In an incident which occurred on the evening of Saturday May 21 at Kota in the taluk, a gang entered a jewellery shop, attacked its owner, and robbed gold ornaments. Ravi, who owns Durga Jewellers at Kota, was at the receiving end of this attack and robbery.

When Ravi was working as per his routine inside his shop, four persons approached him in the guise of prospective customers. They suddenly closed the door of the shop from behind, and attacked Ravi with lethal weapons. They took care to use the opportunity when power supply to the region got severed. Before that, they were moving around the area, eyewitnesses said.

When he came under sudden attack, Ravi raised an alarm. Hearing Ravi's shouts, a newspaper distributor working in the next building, Prabhakar Kamath, opened the door of the jewellery shop to look what was happening. At this, the robbers pushed Kamath and tried to escape in two motor bikes in which they had arrived here.

When Kamath shouted for help, locals tried to stop the fleeing robbers. The robbers, who were surprised by this development, abandoned one of their bikes, and three of them fled in the other motor bike. The other robber made good his escape by running through a lane nearby, it is gathered.

In this melee, several gold ornaments were found scattered outside the shop. Locals helped policemen in collecting them. Brahmavar police circle inspector, Arun B Nayak and police personnel from Kota arrived at the spot, registered a case, and took steps to nab the culprits.

DySP Manjunath Shetty and SP Annamalai also visited the spot.
