Mangaluru: Thumbay dam water level rises - citizens to get water daily

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 25: Water in Thumbay dam which provides water to the city has reached level of 7.4 feet. Based on this satisfactory level, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, A B Ibrahim, has ordered supply of tap water to Mangaloreans every day.

Water flow in the river too has increased. Daily supply of water will be kept up till the level comes down to 6.5 feet, it is gathered. Since the last about a month, the people in the city were getting water supply once in three days, and there were apprehensions of the water supply being stopped completely as the water level had touched the bottom.

As per current expectations monsoon might hit the coast in about two weeks time. At present, there are regular rains in western ghats resulting in increased flow of water in River Kumaradhara. As water released from Nekkilady dam is flowing into Thumbay dam now regularly, there has been considerable improvement in the situation.

    Dear Mr Deputy Commissioner,
Is sand mining permitted on the banks of the Netravathi river near the bridge connecting Mangalore to Thokkotu and Ullal? If not, please pay a visit in the morning and see for yourself, the number of boats actively involved in mining sand from the river banks. Just passing orders banning sand mining is not enough. You have to follow it up with regular visits to these sites so that your orders are followed strictly and don't remain on paper only. Otherwise, its a case of 'Only bark, no bite!'

This is due to the rains in the upper reaches of the ghats and the special soaking prayers to Infant Jesus by Mr.J.R.Lobo MLA of Mangalore. No other Congress or BJP leader prayed for rains this time.

District Administration must increase the height of this dam in order to store additional rain water. This dam was built ages ago when the population was around 2 lacs , but today we are almost 6 lacs.

At this point of time, Do not point fingers at government, religion, parties or whatsoever. It is high time that every house/residence takes enough measures towards rain water harvesting....Had we done this before, I don think a city like Mangalore had to face water scarcity... Its time to act as a sensible citizen and stop pulling each other down... This is not alone for Mangalore but for the country as a whole... , always think wat measures are YOU
(not your community/religion/party) taking towards water conservation?... and if someone has done this, there is no reason to flaunt about it...It is a basic measure which we are aware of but simply ignore it and blame the governing body for it..You be the Change!!

Avinash, I agree with you. We need to vote for educated people with proven track record of working for people and development! Many MP's are just enjoying their position while DK MLA's are slogging!
Shortage of water this summer erupted due to bad planning. Many dams were not utilized on time to store water. very few got into action bit too late. Hope next year people will put pressure and identify all minor and major irrigation dams to put planks on time preferably in October so that whole DK will have water table upgraded!! Who is going to do it is a major question. We are all expert in blame game to take political advantage out of crisis without practicing preventive homework!!

Still two weeks time for the monsoons to hit West coast and irregular rains poured in our Districts, which it self is a great thing to happen. Thanks to God. People have saved from unforeseen calamities.
Let the concerned authorities/government take some pre-cautionary measures to be well prepared to face any drought like situation in the future.

Water flow increased...All are happy...! No water then state government is blamed then later central...!We can't blame the government for the failure of nature...Government can help increasing the ground water table by water harvesting during this rainy season..We need educated politicians like Sir Arvind Kejriwal.. Un-pad people have a limitation when they think logic. They think of today and they sleep happily. Educated people think of the children's future and do some good things for them.. Please Next time make it a point to vote for a educated candidate...irrespective of the parties...!

Thanks to Rain God for saving us from dire consequences.
Now for the next 10 months all MP's MLA's and CM will sleep on existing issues and will suddenly wake up next April, May when again we face the similar water crisis. This is our ministers and mark my words nobody will ever even visit Thumbay to see the proposed development activities.

districts like bangalore mangalore mysore shimoga etc. have provided good comfort level for people living there. No matter what happens in other parts of karnataka, people in these districts showed inertia regarding issues like drought corruption price-rise etc. people wAke up only when they fave problem like shortage of water vegetable supply etc. Apart from communal issue there is no issue that catches attention of people from DK.
