Bengaluru: Elderly couple with no caretakers found dead

Ill-health, old age or starvation likely cause of death

Bengaluru, May 25 (DHNS): An elderly couple, who were leading a secluded life, were found dead at their residence in 2nd ‘A’ cross in Sultanpalya in Hebbal on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased are Venkoba Rao, 80, a retired constable with City Armed Reserve (CAR) police and his wife Kalavathi Bai, 75. They did not have children. Bai’s body was completely decomposed and Rao’s body was partially decomposed, so it is suspected that Bai might have died three days ago and Rao might have died on Monday, police said.

The incident came to light when the neighbours complained of foul smell coming from the house. They informed the police, who visited the house and found it locked from inside. They broke open the door and found the couple lying dead. The bodies were shifted to Dr Ambedkar Medical College for post mortem, police said.

A senior police officer said, “There is no suspicion of foul play, as there were no injuries on the body. The deaths may be due to ill-health or old age. Or, they may have starved to death. Even the family members claimed that they were not in cordial terms with anyone and did not have visitors. The Hebbal police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and investigation is on,” the officer said.

Mukund Rao, a relative of Bai, told Deccan Herald: “Rao had retired from CAR around 20 years ago. They were staying in their own house which had two portions. They had occupied one portion, while the other was lying vacant, as no tenants stayed for long due to the couple’s ill-temper. No neighbours or relatives would visit them, as they would fight with everyone for petty reasons. They used to get food parcelled from a couple of hotels located near their house and did not even have a maid coming to clean their house. We do not know anything about Rao’s relatives. Bai had four sisters, of which two had died,” he added.

A neighbour who did not want to be named said, “Most of them would avoid conversing with them as they would pick a fight. We tried helping them several times, but in vain. The house was a complete mess filled with empty water bottles, coconut shells and food packets. It was almost like a dumping yard. It seems like the house was not cleaned for a couple of years.”

Another relative, who stayed a couple of streets away, said, “I never visited them as they did not like anyone going to their house. It seems like they were mentally disturbed as they did not have children. I got to know about the death after the police informed us.”

Whether elderly couple or single, whether they have children or no children the fate is same such senior citizens. Many such incidents taken place all over. How can they have caretakers when they have sufficient resources? Many elderly people live in Ashrams with great difficulty as they longing for childres or somebody love.

So what if we remove God from the equation?.isn't it easier to die. ?.Why wait. till u r very old. Right from childhood we were taught God is in control. Only humans suffer this way behind four walls inspite of all advancement. With animals the predator kills when u r weak and sick. It's becoming clear to me that humans come from evolution .its survival of the fittest even after death. If you have everything in place, you can expect to live a good life or even good death.Society should evolve and voluntary/mercy killing should be introduced.

Old age except for some is a curse but inevitable.Everybody should pass this stage. If the old people possess some property, wealth and money, they are taken care of by their close relatives and children to certain extent. In some cases, that too are very rare. There are many instances, where old people/couple are left at lurch in spite of having enough money, property due to sheer negligence, ignorance of their own children but to lodged or taken care of by some orphanage,Ashramas,Sevashramas etc. This is what is happening in the society.According to me one should die rather than waiting their old age and depending on others, when all their organs are functioning. But it does not happen so because that is God's will. When we will die, where we will die and how we will die etc to be decided by the God,our creator.Everybody, including me is willing to die before anything unfortunate, sick, handicap or bad will occur.God should grant good health so as to do their own works by themselves until their last breath.Leading secluded life without proper, relationships, connectivity with outside world make the people to die without any of water to their mouth at the time of their death by any one of their relatives, friends is very pathetic. At least one should have one close friend/relative.Any how May God grant their departed soul an eternal peace.

This can happen to most of us.
Our children cannot live with us as they have to make their own livelihood and look after self.
Mangalore is not a metro city except for a few blue collar jobs, hardly can cushion the ever soaring prices and inflation.
All of us once we get into the old age, we tend to become like infants in character and attitude never happy in things going around us.
Sad part is either we will get into that twilight age or we may be bedridden in sickness or we might just conk out anytime.

This is truth and nothing but the hard fact truth.

As much as each and every Citizen is fully responsible to take care of themselves regardless of their age, health and financial resources, the surrounding Community has an obligation to ensure that Senior Citizens are well assisted in their basic daily needs and make sure that that the elderly are well protected. The Community has to seek Government help wherever required so that proper safety, security and also required daily surveillance is timely provided.

The Community in turn receives all the timely guidance from the local Government that has well established connections with the local hospitals and Medical clinics to provide whatever deserving assistance.

"Meals on Wheels" is a prominent activity in North America where the established Community renders daily basic diet to the deserving Senior Citizens and make sure that the elderly are well protected from any outside involvement. This is a well organized system already in place in North America and is functioning very well indeed. Many elderly parents want them to remain independent without disturbing their children, but they are very well protected under the established system thru daily contacts.

All of the above humanitarian gestures are all highly subsidized by the "Tax Payers" where ultimately the Government is fully made responsible.

Whichever part of the world we belong to, the basic Human Needs must be observed under all circumstances and the elderly must be given all help and assistance.

Basic needs should be rendered in all circumstances is easier said than done. The couple shunned the society which in itself is burdened with its' problem. It may be possible for the Govt. in USA but it is not the case in India either for the society or the govt. when their efforts to help are thwarted time and again by this elderly couple and naturally they meet the end as they did.

So sad, this is called oldage. Others who are younger should understand older people be it among relatives or neighbours. As we get older we become attention seeking, insecure or dementia to name a few mental illnesses. During these illness older people have its (disease) characters e.g. collecting empty bottles, coconut shells is typical of Alzheimers disease. No matter how old people behave we as relatives or neighbours need to take care of them.

You are right Mohammed, someone like Snehalaya would have taken them and cared for them during their life-end. But who will approach such a picking-quarrel couple to check if they are in need of help ? Sad indeed. Nobody but they themselves to be blamed.

    RIP Mr & Mrs. Rai..
